~100k mile maintenance items

    Hi All,

    My 2011 Prius is essentially at 100k, and I'm looking to do a one-off checkup to help make the next 100k relatively trouble free too. Not listing all of the "regular maintenance" items like changing engine oil. Trying to limit this discussion to just the non-frequent maintenance items.

    Here is what I have done very recently
    • EGR cleaning
    • Replace all fluids
    • PCV valve
    • Cleaned intake/throttle body/MAF sensor

    Here are some things I could consider
    • Replace original 12 volt battery?
    • Front wheel bearing (tire on & elevated, try to wiggle for any looseness
    • Front ball joints (tire on & elevated, pry up on tire to feel for any looseness)
    • Steering linkages (tire on ground, wiggle steering and feel for looseness)
    • Replace original brakes probably due...
    • HV battery fan cleaning, just heard this mentioned but not sure how to do it
    • Engine used oil analysis, curious if they pickup any coolant leaking
    • Check alignment? Would have to have a shop do this
    Anything else that I should do?

    Well THIS is what happens when the world shuts down and people have a lot of time on their hands. :D

    You might do the HV battery fan cleaning. I did that on my 2012 v with about 60k miles, and it was completely not worth it. Minute layer of dust. I expect that depending on people's cars / pets / etc. some may have issues, but many don't.

    "brakes" - you can pretty easily check the brake pad thickness, maybe without even removing the wheels. Use that as a guide to changing the pads. If you need to / want to dive in there, greasing caliper slide pins is a less visible but still important maintenance item. Flushing brake fluid is often not called for on these cars, but it should be. So when you say you changed all fluids, if you did not do this, and really want to do something there you go.

    But really on all the other stuff, you are now in a phase, at 100k miles, where you're in normal maintenance, but waiting for stuff to break mode. Having had many cars for many years, unless there is a known weak point on a particular car, I have found that being mostly reactive rather than pro-active is the better way to go.

    If your battery is original and 9 years old, well, you are lucky and it might be ready to go. But it might not. I usually monitor my batteries to gauge how much life is left in them and then wait for a great time to buy (like last black friday) and replace them then - maybe 10% early, but if get it for 50% off... I doubt anyone will tell you it is not a good idea to replace a 9 year old battery. But if you really wanted to stretch it longer, you might be able to.

    I appreciate the humor, but this is not virus related.

    ^ Any chance you have a resource that you can point me too that would show me how to do this?

    Agree to the greasing caliper pins, is anti-seize a reasonable choice?

    Changing Brake Pads: The When and How
    ^ This guy says that 3 or 4 mm of pad left is a good time to replace.

    Sure, but I'm mostly interested trying to see signs of advanced wear and do preventative maintenance.

    Is there a battery that people on priuschat seem to like? I prefer parts that meet/exceed OEM quality.

    I just spent all day doing maintenance on my wife's 2010 Prius. I changed the oil and filter, CVT fluid. spark plugs, upgraded the VVT-i solenoid to a Quantum Solenoid, changed the engine coolant and both radiator hoses, inverter coolant, and removed my EGR cooler and swapped in a clean one as mine was completely plugged. That was a PITA to do. I sure wish that they designed that better to make servicing it easier as those back 2 bolts and the hidden one under the cooler are a nightmare to reach. I wonder what a dealer would charge for everything I did today? I have a new 12V battery to install also since it still has the original one.

    A couple months ago I replaced the PCV valve and installed an oil catch can. I cleaned the intake manifold and throttle body at that time.

    One thing people forget to check is burned out light bulbs. There are two little side marker lights in each head light assembly and people do not realize that they are burned out. Also the rear license plate lights burn out and damage the fixtures. Then subsequent bulbs burnout much faster. They can be replaced with LED bulbs if you are so inclined. The LEDs draw less current and last longer.

    my side marker led bulb got burnt and I still haven’t change it :(

    Yeah, walking the dog in evenings, as cars roll by, every 3rd or 4th one has at least one (typically of 2) license plate light burnt out.

    What else ya doin while you shelter in your residence ;).

    Hope it isn't the passenger one, as that was VERY fiddly when I had to do that on our 2010:cool:.

    But video worthy of how you hand contort to do the job(y).

    i think it’s the passenger side, lol I forgot, I’ll have to check it later. I don’t have another LED bulb to replace it with, unless I switch it back to oem but it’ll be an orange color.

    @NutzAboutBolts I have big hands. I could not get to the side marker lights. I had to loosen the front bumper cover to get to the headlight assembly bolt. Then I was able to take the assembly out and replace the side marker lights. It was way too much work for a little light bulb, but I did put in LEDs.

    lol nice, disregard the side marker, it was my DRL bulb that was out, its much easier than the side marker thats for sure.

    I'm pretty sure I've done side marker bulbs on both sides now. Wish I could remember for sure, lol. I've got a vague recollection of unbolting the coolant reservoir bottle, shifting it a little. Maybe the AC line bracket too? It was awkward for sure.
