can anyone tell me which of the two orange wires going into the hv battery pack is the positive wire?

Polarity can be determined with a multimeter, analog or digital. Generally speaking, bright orange means DANGER! Always connect the black meter lead to ground, do not work two handed! This is not ordinary house voltage, it can turn you to toast. Why did you ask?:cheer2:

In this case, that won't work: both sides of the high-voltage circuit are isolated from vehicle ground. (If you can measure a voltage from either lead to ground, there is a leak somewhere that should be fixed.)

TY That is interesting to know, so we can assume there is another (black, or other color) that represents the negative side??? I was mostly interested in the OPs safety. I have not as yet acessed the HV Battery, as I have no reason to, but was concerned of somebody asking " Which orange wire is the positive?" I assume all orange wires on the Prius are 200Volts plus.

1 orange is PLUS and 1 is MIN
no way to see. only measure ( you can only see if you now what connected side is standard PLUS or MIN )

A multimeter will show you polarity! However if the chasis ground is not physically connected to the HV Bat, when the HV system is powered up the question of polarity may be mute as both wires are equally live, whether plus 200V or minus 200 volts. Should a inadvertant good ground appear ( such as a grounding strap) Electrocution and sparks could appear! Its like standing in a bathtub and only touching the neutral wire on your working radio without the insulation. The neutral wire will also kill you when powered up. AGAIN OMEGA: what are you attempting?

What kind of plug-in is that?

If you try to measure to ground from either lead there is a good possibility you will trip the ground fault circuit and shut down the battery pack. All meters use -some- current, less expensive ones more than good ones. If you do trip that circuit you have to perform the reset procedure.

I doubt very much you could electrocute yourself -before- the ground fault circuit activated, but I wouldn't put myself in that situation. That would violate, at least, the fifth commandment of electronics. See the "Ten commandments of electronics" below.

    Ten Commandments of Electronics

    1. Beware the lightning that lurketh in an undischarged capacitor, lest it cause thee to be bounced upon thy buttocks in a most ungentlemanly manner.

    2. Cause thou the switch that supplies large quantities of juice to be opened and thusly tagged, so thy days may be long and fruitful on this earth.

    3. Prove to thyself that all circuits that radiateth and upon which thou worketh are grounded, less they lift thee to high frequency potential and cause thee to radiateth also.

    4. Take care thou useth the proper method when thou taketh the measure of high voltage circuits so that thou doth not incinerate both thee and the meter; for verily, thou hast no account number and can easily be replaced, the meter doth have one, and as a consequence, bringeth much woe unto the supply department.

    5. Tarry not amongst those who engage in intentional shocks, for they are clearly non-believers and are not long for this world.

    6. Take care thou tampereth not with interlocks and safety devices, for this will incur the wrath of thy seniors and bringeth the fury of the safety officer down about thy head and shoulders.

    7. Work thou not on energized equipment, for if you doth, thy buddies will surely be buying beers for thy widow and consoling her in other ways not generally accepted by thee.

    8. Verily, verily I say unto thee, never service high voltage equipment alone, for electric cooking is a slothful process and thy might sizzle in thine own fat for hours on end before thy Maker sees fit to end thy misery and drag thee into His fold.

    9. Trifle thou not with radioactive tubes and substances, lest thou commence to glow in the dark like a lightning bug, and thy wife be frustrated nightly and have no further use for thee except thy wage.

10.Commit thou to memory the works of the prophets, which are written in the instruction books, which giveth the straight dope and which consoleth thee, and thou cannot make unexplained mistakes.

    Can't give a straight answer, 'cause I don't know. I will say:

1.) Please to remember you are working on something that can fry you like a hotdog, so watch yourself. :target:

    2.) Whatcha' makin'? :welcome:

3.) What's that plug in the bumper? :thumb:

4.) these threads may be of value to you:

Should you have a large scewdriver, set it upon any metallic part of the relays and power up car, should no result occur then wet each index finger copiously and apply each finger to a relay. Should nothing still occur, get bucket and set both feet in and then fill with water and try experiment again. (set bucket on floor). Unless we know what you are attempting to do, we can't help you. I notice the smart moderators do not bother to reply. Be sure to also observe the above ten commandments.

Go outside the house or apartment and reset all the circuit breakers.

    Andy,

Thanks for the info, but I think you're a little confuse about what this forum is all about. I think the forum you need to be a member should be for those who are at the age 10 and up to 15 or those who's IQ is within that age bracket. Dear Omega: When you want help you have to be totally honest and factual. Otherwise nobody can assist you. As long as you withhold vital information, one cannot respond in an intelligent manner. Did you attempt to use a multi-meter? From the phraseology of your first enquiry I was truly concerned you might electrocute yourself. AGAIN What are you attempting ???
