Hi Jerry. I think I will be getting a M3 and am curious to how you use solar panels to charge it. What is your system? Panels to charge a battery and then have the battery charge your car at night?

Ahh ok. We are looking into a Tesla power wall and would need to save a solar roof as my HOA doesn’t allow solar panels. We are working on that. Do you recommend a solar company?

Sadly, the solar company that installed mine seems to be out of business. They were struggling to find skilled and willing workers (as are most businesses). Here's one possible resource. I have not used them, but they seem to know what they're talking about. https://www.solarunitedneighbors.org

Curious what impelled you to get sinus surgery. I think one of my sons could use some. Headaches every time the weather changes

I wasn't hurting, but had constant pressure on the right side. The worst of it was that the right eye kept getting infected. Eye doctor didn't see any cause for it so I went to an ENT. He did an MRI. That showed a deviated septum (to the right) with a bone spur on that side, plus a smaller bone spur on the left side of the septum. Surgery was the only fix.

      Hi Jerry,
Thanks for all your posts. I'm looking at a 2013 PIP with 58k miles. Assuming battery check and test drive is fine, do you have any other advice?
      Thank you,

Sounds like a good find. I'd treat it like any other used car purchase, but with the added check of the battery. See if you can get a car fax, check the VIN on toyota.com/owners to see if it was serviced by Toyota. If it's your first Prius, it'll make strange noises, so you might want an experienced Prius owner with you so you. know what's normal.

HI. I own to prii. both 2008. both base wifes is white mine is red. Hers 119k mine 117K original batteries. hers came from PHX hot dry (battery killer). mine from FL. (hot and humid) both are starting to show signs of battery wear. Would a Prolong charger be worth the investment? I'm leaning towards that because I can always resell the unit. They are about ($500) used.

Use an ohm meter across the two outside pins on the coils. If it's down around 8 ohms or under, it's bad. It should be about 12 ohms. In between and it's probably on the way out.

If you get an open reading, it may be because you're trying to read resistance through a coil rather than a resister. Some digital meters will be fooled by the inductance of the coil.

Also, if the coil is actually bad (as in not firing well enough for ignition) you'll get a misfire code and it will run very rough.

OK. They are not failed but could be heading south. If I go ahead and dive in there again. I will check all of them for sure. It is not running to rough. yet Just not perfect. I will Ohm them next time I am in there for sure. Thanks

"My early '17 Prime has the cartridge type, the later ones have the spin on."
Can you define early and late 2017's or point to where I can find this? I have a prime MFD 9/2017 and bought about 2 months later 10/28/2017. I would just go out and look but it's in the shop getting fixed from hitting debris on the freeway.

        jerrymildred
Not that I know if. Given the date, I'd guess yours is late 2017 and has the spin on filter. But you'd have to look to be sure.

Honestly, I think this is the first time I've heard of that one. I have an old Prolong charger.

PS, asking people one at a time will take a long time - probably forever. Far better to post a thread to the whole forum.

I am considering buying a Prolong charger for my 2003 Prius, which is in excellent condition, but is 16 years old and we got 290k miles on the original battery. It only now gave a P3006 code after we left it sitting for 2 months while on vacation in our Tacoma. Do you think it could work on a battery that has already worked so well? Do you know of anyone using Prolong to get more than 300k miles?
      1. jerrymildred
        jerrymildred
I think there have been several with those kinds of miles. I'd suggest you get in touch with Jeff at Hybrid Automotive for answers to whether the device would help with your code.

Here's an article that might be helpful from one of the really good Prius shops. https://lusciousgarage.com/blog/gen_1_prius_battery_failure/

Hey Jerry, I have a toyota prius 2013 that I got roll on roll off from Japan. Everytime, I start up for the first time in the morning, however, it makes this loud knocking sound from under the hood and something under the passenger side spins loudly. Any idea what it could be?

Look for threads in the Gen 3 forums about knocking. Probably a clogged egr circuit. If so, you need to clean that before you blow the head gasket. You'll also get more information by posting questions on the forum so hundreds of brains can provide their experience.

Hi Jerry - Glad to hear that Sun got your recall taken care of. Did you need to schedule in advance? I am nearing my first oil change on the '14 PIP I bought back in November, and hope to have the recall work done at the same time. Also, what do you typically pay for an oil change from the dealer?

Thanks for your time and insightful posts...Kevin

Good to know. Thank you. I will call them a week or two out. I wish I could do my own oil changes, but I don't own any of the ramps/jacks, pans, etc that I would need, and I'm afraid that there is a "learning curve" that I should have completed on a '96 Chevy or the likes many years ago, but never did.

No worries. It's pretty easy. If you're close to New Port Richey, maybe you could bring yours over for the next oil change and I'll show you how or else talk you through it. Can't do that now because I'm getting ready for a three week trip to Africa and leave next Friday.

Thanks. I may take you up on that offer one of these days. I am in the Trinity area a few times per week, so it may just work out. Have a good trip, and be safe over there.

      Jerry,

I see you have the Prolong system AND are an electrical engineer and/or lineman. I have three Prii and am thinking about it. What do you think, Good Stuff, or Snake Oil?
      1. jerrymildred
        jerrymildred
Good stuff, assuming you have Prii with NiMh batteries. When we came back from Honduras, we bought two Gen 2's from Todd at Tampa Hybrids. He actually recommended I get one since we had two batteries to maintain. It impressed me that he would suggest that since it would potentially cost him repair income down the road.
        I'll send more by message.
