Hey all Prius lovers. My Dealer in Austin TX tells me this it what it costs to replace a key with "programming" Is this a ripoff? Does the Honda Insight keys cost $400?
$500 to replace a lost FOB, as told by my dealer. I live in the Bay Area, however, where everything is more expensive. But yeah, that's roughly the right price. Of course you can always try buying key FOBs from ebay which will be much less $$. But you probably have to get the (secondary) key cut and the FOB programmed for your car. Word of advice, just don't lose it.
Purchase a new fob online from a Toyota parts dealer, then have your dealer program the car to accept it. Tom
Welcome to the forum. Keep in mind, we really don't allow multiple duplicate topics in different forums.
You need to get a new key fob. The ebay fobs will only operate the ignition-the other functions will not work. You can find a dealer that will give 10% off for the fob. I got mine for $175. The same dealer programed it for $40 while others wanted up to $170. You really need to shop around to get the best price for fob replacement.
shucks ... wish you would have told me that 3 or 4 years back ... I wouldn't have bought 2 on ebay (working fine btw) ... I wonder if it is too late to get my money back.
Hill, You got lucky. Are your fobs the silver logo type? I tried two silver fobs from ebay and they would only start the car with the key in the slot and no other function would work. I did get a refund from the ebay seller, but the dealer programing fee was my loss. Are all functions of your ebay silver fob working? Who was the ebay seller?
The non-SKS fobs (that have to be inserted into the dash to start the car) will work fine and can be programmed without a scan tool. The problem is the SKS fobs. In general you can't pair a used SKS fob with the car. You can still program the buttons on it like a non-SKS fob but you can't do the SKS functions. Even new ones need the scan tool to pair them.
Hi all, I’m thinking about getting a spare for my 2004 GenII that uses the black logo non-SKS type fob. Can a second hand (eg ebay) fob of the correct type be programmed to both start the car and lock/unlock the doors? I'm sure I read somewhere that while almost everyone had no problem programming them to start the car that there was mixed success with programming the door lock function. Do the black logo non sks type still have the usage limit after which the door lock programming wont be accepted, or is that only for the silver logo type?
