I hope to have my 2010 V with advanced tech in a few weeks. I am used to an aftermarket Pioneer Avic with all the constraints bypassed. How badly is the factory nav crippled? What can't I do while driving?
WELL, that's a tough question. If someone comes up with a bypass method (as in the 2004-2009), then you're somewhat limited. I do think that you'll be able to do MORE than folks with the Gen II though. If you are used to the Pioneer unit and its unfettered access whilst driving, you'll be quite displeased.
This thread has been going for a few months: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ation-input-override-speed-sensor-bypass.html There is a commercial-available solution from Prestigious Society that may be what you are looking for.
Here's the specific thread on the Prestigious Society solution: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-prestigious-society-navi-hack-installed.html Note my post and pictures of my install, towards the end of that thread.
I also did the PS nav hack. Works VERY well. I put my control buttons right next to the start button, about an inch from the steering wheel. Also, when you remove the console, you can remove all of the plastic parts without using tools. There is space behind the front cupholder to fit your fingers to pop off the plastic around the shifter.
