Hi Prions: Somewhere a while back, someone mentioned an annoying rattle in the dash. I noticed one yesterday that has been intermittent. The noise seems to be coming from somewhere between the steering wheel and the miles per hour readout numbers, and under the dash surface. It looks pretty well sealed up with no access from under the dash even if I could get my 6foot 3inch frame under the dashboard with a flashlight.
Is this the same rattle mentioned elsewhere, and, if so, what caused it and did it go away? It isn't really bad and, I guess, it's a measure of how quite the car is for the most part that I can even hear it at all.
Bob, still amazed that I snagged a Prius.

A rattle that I thought I heard from the dash was corrected by moving the passenger seat belt height adjustment down a notch (rattles and squeaks aren't always where they seem).

Also, it's always good to remove all loose items from drawers and cubbies before trying to chase down a rattle (they're often the cause).

    Hope this helps.

Yeah, there was a dash rattle post string a while back. I'm thinking it was on of our Moderators. Maybe Tag or Wolfman.

He finally pulled some dash sections, saw some possible contact points and wedged some absorbent material in just in case. As I recall, he couldn't be sure which point was the offending noisemaker, but his efforts did pay off.

Kinda like repairing cockpit of a '47 Navion. Know what I mean?

    I mentioned it before

Even with my dash half apart I couldn't easily reach back and find the rattle.

Mine only happens when the temp display is < 63F - which means it's temp dependant in my case.

One of these days I'll hunt it down. The dealer never tests the car when it's cool so they never hear it. Plus, now that I put the EV button in, I'm afraid they'd use the fact that I've gone in there as an excuse to not do the repair (even though I reported it before I EVb'd my car).

It was Evan Fusco who wrote about the noise in his dash. I have several sqeaks which come from my dash area, one is a popping sound that seems to come from the dash/windshield interface usually if I am going over an expansion joint. I think the dash can squeak where the plastic panels come together by the small glass side windows. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions on how to fix these. The passenger seat belt buckle will rattle on the b pillar if it's not positioned properly. The dash is difficult to take apart. I did the EV change and didn't get the impression that further dissasembly would be easy.

Yeah, it was Evan - and Bob, I bet Tag will be enraged that you thought it was him simply because he doesn't have his Prius yet

My dash rattle mimics Bob's perfectly...location is correct...seems to come when cooler weather. Will have it looked at with first oil change.
    It's irritating.

Tag won't be mad...this was just another fantasy problem to discuss with other "Patients" who discuss their fantasy Prii relentlessly.

Imagine what a skilled complainer Tag will be once he completes his training...pity the poor Service Advisor who tries to blow HIM off!!!

My dashboard rattle is the speaker cover on top of the dash. all it needs is something wedged in it to tighten it up.

Jennifer Hartman's Prius was doing that with me when I first picked it up. My rattle isn't from that location, but more from the spedo display.

Got my beast yesterday. Driving around today... noticed rattle intermittent
seemingly froim the dash behind the glove boxes....

Gonna take some of these hints before trying to remove the dash...

Finding I get a real kick out of stealth mode. Wife things I'm just looney.

Had my first rattle this morning.

Somewhere from the dash in front of me, but remembering this thread I pushed on the Center Speaker Cover and it seemed to stop. Not conclusive but I'm hopeful it's that simple.

Not really a rattle, but more a buzz of plastic on plastic in sympathy with the road harmonics. Only appeared at certain speeds on certain types of road surfaces.

    Dashboard rattle

I was very annoyed that the car I had been so excited about obtaining for so long already had a rattle. I would expect that from Ford, not Toyota. Luckily, though, I found the source of the rattle without much effort, and now that I know what it is, I care much less about it. I simply put my hand on the speaker grille directly above the video screen, and the rattle went away. The rattle only occurs when I am playing music (and I don't play it that loud).

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could add to the speaker grille to make it fit slightly tighter?

    Thanks,
    Virtuous.

Need to add this to the FAQ :)

If you have a Dash Rattle/Buzz - the first suspect is the Center Speaker.

I just noticed the dash rattle when I changed to the Michelin Hydroedge tires. It did not rattle at normal inflation pressures but did when I bumped it up to 42/40. On my car, it's the panel directly below the small forward window on the driver side. It even feels loose. the one on the passenger side, while loose also, does not rattle.

And the center dashboard squeak is worse with the new tires too. Nothing external, like the speaker grill, is causing that one. It seems to be internal, maybe the center speaker? The dealer fixed a very annoying right rear seat belt rattle earlier. And I also have the common door rubbing dashboard issue too. There seems to be more than a few fit issues with the early Pruis (Nov 2003). I assume those of you taking delivery now aren't noticing these things...hope so anyway.

    Fan Rattle??

Took possession of my Prius a few weeks ago. Noticed a very slight clicking noise from the driver side fan duct when fan is on high after sitting all day in the heat. Sounds like a wire or the fan cage is slightly rubbing the fan blade. Maybe worn bearings on fan? The noise goes away at lower fan speeds or when the temp drops down in the vehicle. Anyone else with this issue?

Well, something is now rattling in mine, and I'm getting annoyed. I'll see if this is doing it...

One of the few things that I dislike about the Prius is the number of rattles. The car at 5,000 miles rattled more than my previous car (2002 GTI) at 23,000 miles. Turn the sound system off, drive over some uneven pavement, and you'll likely hear a symphony of rattles.

I just slid some felt discs in around that small panel under the front small window to see if that would take care of it and it did. Just a temp fix for now. These tires are much stifffer than the stock tires and at 42/40 feels pretty solid. Anything that's going to ratttle or squeak does.

Now I wish I could isolate the creaky one under the center speaker grill. I've heard this one on other Pruis so it's the more common one. Anyone know how easy it is to get the grill off? I've pulled on it and didn't exactly know where the snaps are located and didn't want to chance it. I bet it's the speaker that's making the noise. If not something right under it like the entire cd player or 6 cd's.
