I went to grab a bite to eat and realized the line was far to long so I hopped back into the car, I heard a huge grinding sound when I went to put the car into reverse. I was like Wth is that? I looked around to see if any machinery was around and I saw nothing. I wanted to rule out it was not my car. This ever happen to anyone else? Or maybe I did hear something that was not my car, please tell me it was not my car.
Sticky parking brake? Or, if you were on a slope and didn't use the parking brake, the parking pawl can sometimes make a noise when disengaging. You probably already know that the transmission gears are always fully meshed, so you did not hear the grinding of gear teeth.
I was on a hill, and I was out of the car for about 30 seconds, so I would say it was not moving. I hope no damage was done.
Maybe it was the reverse chime - telling you it was weary and tired of always being called upon when the car is placed in reverse
You ARE aware that there is no reverse gear, right? Reverse just uses the electric motor (MG2) in reverse. Now if you have mudflaps, and they were over a curb, that can cause a loud noise as they are dragged across the curb. It's quiet when they are dragged onto the curb.
No mud flaps, and no, no idea how the thing works honestly. However today, I put the car in reverse, had my foot on the brake and the brakes swelled and stopped the car, kinda like not having brakes, then having them superfast. I am wondering if I am putting the car into reverse to fast after starting the car. I would not think so, but something is not right. Going to the dealer in the morning, maybe I need to be retrained on how to drive this thing. Far cry from a minivan.
This is a known problem for some people. See this thread - http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-main-forum/65875-braking-in-reverse.html
IMO I would think it's more of a learning curve with the new vehicle. Nothing bad meant by that comment for sure. Just a learning curve. Since it does not have a transmission pursae, you don't feel things the same way with the MG's etc.
Ah, thanks for the link, I am still going to the dealer in the morning for a bad rattle in my glove box area. I have not heard the grinding again, so hopefully it was something else and not my car.
I'm crossing my fingers and going with a stick stuck into something under the car or something similar, maybe ran over something plastic like and drug it a short distance maybe etc.
I had to cancel the appointment with the dealer, had to do something else. Going in on Tuesday. I have not heard anything, but I did have the brakes swell on me again.
