Has anyone tried to play DVD on the console display? I know Sienna console display can be used for DVD viewing if I'm not driving.
NO this is not something that is possible with the hardware setup. Besides that, in most states it is illegal to have any sort of video entertainment (games or TV) visible from the driver's seat. While it may be possible to do a modification (as was the case on the Sienna, most likely), it would not be a safe thing to do. I am sure that you would be able to find someone who could create virtually any mod for you.
You need to research this one a bit - I believe the system supports DVD - but the software does not allow it. Our Lexus is similar - but you can watch DVD while stopped. A simple mod allows viewing anytime. So the hardware likely supports it - and the software may not on the Prius - but may on a different Toyota product. Hrmmm..... To avoid the flames, just explain you only want to use it while parked We use it on all long hauls - just got back from San Diego, and the kids *loved* the Tremors "Attack pack" They really made a mistake not bringing Kevin Bacon back - but all in all - quite entertaining...
It depends on how. Are you wondering if factory navigation can read DVD movie and display on the screen? Quick answer is NOPE, it's not possible because you have a CD changer not a DVD changer. It can't read DVD discs. Lexus is different because some models come equipped with DVD player and designed to play and watch movies when parked. There are ways to heck the system and feed video signal to the system and display it on the screen. I believe it can be done in Prius but the problem is, screen resolution on Prius is not that high and display driver is only configured for 256 color so image quality will be very pool.
I thought the system was also DVD.... There is another not too difficult mod that could be performed... Run the video into the reverse cam video, and use a video switch (they make remote controlled switches which can be found on Ebay for $30). Others have shown how to make a switch that turns on reverse video while driving. Turn on the switch, switch input to DVD, and you get video. For audio, run it into the AUX jack... You would also need one of those portable DVD players with video/audio out - but in theory..............
buy one of those portable DVDs for people in back, or simply use a laptop. i'm thinking modifying that screen will void some warranty, not to mention it's probably illegal to have a DVD in the front
I'm pretty sure it's a DVD drive because Nav software is a DVD. When I tried to back up the Nav DVD my computer copied ~7.1GB off that DVD. Maybe console software doesn't have the video playback function. It'd also be nice if I can play the ipod video back to the console display.
I also have a Nav system in my Prius V, and there is both a 4-disk CD changer, and a DVD slot. The DVD slot is used to read the software and map data for the GPS system. So, while it would require some sort of mod to make it work, there IS a DVD system (as well as a separate CD Changer).
Anyone has a write up on this? or activating the reverse wire to the head unit? I seen the post done in Gen 2 prius but nothing for Gen 3...
