What are you paying for your manufacturer 5,000 mile service? I paid.....

You must be well aware that auto policy prices are a lot more driver-specific and less so car-specific. Just because I'm paying a lot for my Prius Geico policy, it does not mean Geico is ripping me off. I was quoted with all several major companies and AAA was actually the most expensive! With the AAA membership, my 6-month policy with them would cost over $700. Here is a thought for you: you may want to get quoted by Geico again and don't be surprised if they are a lot cheaper than your current AAA. The year of 2000, when you had Geico, was along time ago… they have become a lot more competitive ever since. One of the agents in a company I was quoting with even admitted that in the past 10 years Geico has changed the way car insurance quotes are calculated.

 

Just got done with my first oil change. In Wisconsin the 2 dealers I've bought from comp your first 3 oil changes when you buy a Toyota. I just got all the 5k stuff done ... they even used the synthetic 6 months oil. Total cost $0 ... although the dealer shuttle dropped me off at the mall for the 1.5 hours it took & I spent some money there

 

I was just sharing my experience. You provided a data point to show that your insurance doubled when you moved to a Prius. I was just pointing out that mine went down when I moved to a Prius. And that it wasn't going from a really high premium to a slightly lower high premium.

And I have gotten quotes from Geico over the years, both when I was with USAA and after I moved to AAA. Generally around 1.5x the cost of either. I also checked them when I switched to my Prius, and they indicated to me at the time (2006) that they charged a premium to insure hybrid vehicles. Wheras CSAA (the California branch of AAA) gives a discount for them.

Also of note, at least in this area, AAA quotes for 1 year, rather than 6 months. When I first looked at a quote from them I thought they were the highest by far, when in fact once I realized it was a 12 month quote rather than a 6 month they ended up being the cheapest. Not saying you made the same mistake I did, just pointing out my experience.

No, I confirmed with the agnet, the quote was for a 6-month policy. I'm not sure why my Prius insurance is so expensive. I have tried quotes with all major companies and it is always more than twice the Odyssey quote. When I ask why, they always blame on the "brand new car" thing and at least one of them (I thing it was allstate but not sure) said hybrid insurance are more expensive.

 

Unless you have found another new math you don't have any advantage in maintenance cost over someone who only drives 5000 miles a year.

 

I just took my 2010 Prius III in for 5k service. Total was $30.17, including tax. This was a full synthetic oil change, but no tire rotation (I just had snow tires put on). This deal is good as long as I own the car.

 

I just went for my first oil change (5000 miles service).

Total for regular 5k service (oil, filter, tire rotation etc.) was about $114 and oil change $67. I asked for only oil change. They used appropriate synthetic oil.

This is in Southern California.

I don't think you got it. Let me clue you in: what I meant was that my extra costs for maintenance in my Prius compared to my previous car (Honda CR-V) is far compensated by the savings in gas cost in my Prius compared to the CR-V?.Why??? Because I drive a lot. If my commute was just 10 miles a day, I wouldn't be saving that much money with Prius compared to the CR-V. Got it?

Yes, that was the wording used, in part, for a choice in a poll about why people buy a Prius. And I made a comment to the affect that perhaps if you DID do the math you WOULDN'T necessarily go with a Prius. Don't think most folks agreed with me...

By the way it still doesn't make much sense. What you're saying, in your round about way, is that given equal mileage the Prius is cheaper overall to operate then the Honda. So what was the purpose of your original post?

 

I guess I was not clear enough, and you're right, we can't read minds here.

I don't see much point in perpetuating this discussion but my cost/mile in the Prius is $0.04 based on my lifetime MPG up to date while the same cost in my Honda is $0.10. It's easy to see that the more I drive the Prius, instead of my Honda, the better. Let's say I drive only 5K/year, that would result in savings of $300, which is roughly what I'm paying extra for insurance + maintenance in my Prius compared to the Honda; therefore no savings there. But, in reality, I drive 30K/year resulting in savings of $1800, which is far over the extra cost of the Prius insurance and maintenance compared to the Honda.

I just got my tires rotated with my mechanic, $10 , I guess that makes up for the high oil change price -_-

Toyota was going to charge $50+ for a tire rotation, the heck!?!

 

SF Toyota -- 5K mile service including oil change, tire rotation, check fluids, etc -- $89 plus tax. And they even changed the backup beeps to only one beep.

 

I am used to paying about 15-20 dollars total for a tire rotation and oil change. I just paid 48 plus tax for my first 5K service. A bit of a rip off of what I am used to, but still in the somewhat reasonable range. I am in South Florida.
