Hate to Have to Rip the Dealer as my 1st Post

    I've been lurking here since June 28th when I ordered my Package III with solar. Anyway, the car came in yesterday. I went to dealer to finalize everything and I had a "pushy" finance manager who offered me a "deal" on a Platinum service agreement for 8 years 75,000 miles. ($75 off MRSP). I informed him that it was possilbe to get a better deal on the 7 year 100,000 mile warranty from a web site (guess which one?). Anyway, he informs me that I have to buy the warranty now or I would not be eligable because it would be a "used car." Not doing my homework I agreed. I come to find out from Toyoya's own site that you are eligable to buy it for 36 months/36,000 miles. Of course, I was mad and they're supposed to take the charge off when I pick up my car Monday.

    So watch out...

    I had a similar exchange with the hard-sell finance manager when I purchased my car. This seems to be a relatively common and disappointing practice. Glad to hear that you held your ground and decided to decline their offer.

    Thank you. Like I said, I didn't want to post anything negative or complain... but this is fresh in my mind and really had me upset.

    You wanna piss them off and get your revenge? Call them and tell them you've decided to cancel the warranty for now. You have 30 days to get a full refund.

    How about instead of "Burning Your Bridges" and Feeling OK for a couple of minutes. Just call them back and tell them your are going to cancel the warrenty deal, UNLESS, they want to match the price you know you can get it for, + $100.00. (They do deserve to make a little $ off the deal).
    If they say NO, cancel anyway, buy it You Know Where!!!
    They lose the $100 bucks!

    Now your really happy, and you still can go back to the Service Dept when you need work!!! If anyone gives you crap, you can look them in the eye and say "You had your chance!!!"

    Why do they deserve the extra $100? Because of their initial honesty and integrity? Screw 'em. Cancel your warranty and don't get another one. It really is an unnecessary expense.

    My "finance guy" at my dealer actually gave me the weekend to think about buying the extended warranty and rustproofing, and when I came back to him with a significantly lower price I found online, he matched it! Very nice....

    Everyone has to make a living ! My old roomate was mangr in finance at a big dealership and he would come home with some stories. Just know ...before buying any car that these finance guys dont make much money on ur deal unless they add on some goodies to your loan otherwise they basically working for free. I NEVER take the loan from dealership...ever. I always shop the loan , before the purchase then when they send me down the hall to talk to these guys i tell'em look i already have xx% so lets save ea other some time unless you can beat that. They never have been able to beat my credit union or bank.

    Everyone has to make a living...just be smart and dont walk into the dealership with that puppy dog ..i'll do anything to take this car home today look. Have your financing bids with you BEFORE you sign anything so you can make the dealership compete. I usually use my credit union but i always give the dealership finance guy a crack at it. Shame on them for lying...that starts at the top ya know!

    Everyone has to make a living... does not need to equate to "there's a sucker born every minute". The F+I department tends to take advantage of the fact that most of the buying public doesn't know, or doesn't want to learn, what's best for them in the long run. I financed my last three cars through my credit union. They offer me a fixed rate (been 5.9% for a 72 month loan for the past 4 years, but also 4.9 for 60, 3.9 for 48) that I've yet had any dealer beat.

    I financed the Prius through them, and the sales guy let on he was disappointed with his finance guy for not selling us on their own financing... and it hit me as to why. I'm the worst possible customer. The informed consumer ;). Not only did I cost them any extra on going through their bank, but I also told the finance guy straight up I want no extra crap added to the loan. No extra warranty, no etching, no freakin' crap.

    It all stems from buying my Elantra 10 years back. It was the worst consumer purchase I've ever made (not the car, but the dealer and sales person), and I will never make that mistake again.

    My point is that I specifically I asked a question (can I buy this in the future if I choose to?) and was flat out LIED to. It's one thing for the deal to have an upper hand and withhold or not offer information, it's another thing to lie to a customer.

    No?

    Your absolutely right. If confronted, they often say well you misunderstood. Its pretty common practice. There is a really good article that was mentioned in an earlier post about a F&I guy that came clean and told his story... very scary. I try to find and post.

    Rustproofing? I have not heard of anyone offering this. I have been under the Prius; how are they going to rustproof it? There is only exposed metal in a few areas and I am sure it is already treated with something. Educate me please....

    The best way, IMO, to address that is to write a letter to the general manager and/or owner. Just the facts, no personal attacks, the finance manager may be able to lie his way out of it once or twice, but after they hear that story time and again, he will be done.

    The F&I guy is the last place for the dealer to make a profit. If you buy from a "back-end" store they will most likely make some money on you. With buy-rate and leg it's very easy.

    "LEG" is an overinflated montly payment that you agree upon with the salesperson. Typically it can be anywhere from $10-$30 more than it's supposed to be. This way, when you are in the F&I office, they can sell that warranty "for only $10 more a month"...and the customers think that' a great deal. I did it a lot.

    "BUY RATE" is making money on the interest rate. It's harder now with the credit crunch but it's still attainable. If they are getting the rate at 5%, they will charge you at least 1% higher. For secondary finance it's even higher.

    Know what you qualify for and always take a payment calculator.

    1. Cancel the warranty, no dramatics just tell them you changed your mind.

    2. Don't buy a warranty for 2 years and 11 months, then if you think you need one get it through this site.

    3. Don't tell the car dealer he's a crook, he already knows that and has no trouble living with it. Most car dealers are crooks and don't consider it a good day unless they have screwed several customers.

    Oh, jeez.

    Extended warranties are a waste of money. Matching the online price is just a way of making you feel good about getting nicked. Cancel it while you still can and use the money for something useful, like paying down the loan or earning interest in a CD.

    Rustproofing? Are you kidding? Yeah, drilling holes through factory-bonded paint and metal, that'll help. Not!

    BS. Yes, everyone has to make a living. I'm not in the car business, but I do work on 100% commission so I know what its like. There is never any excuse for lying to make a sale. If you don't know enough about your product to sell the benefits of purchasing it and you have to lie...you need to be flipping burgers at Wendys and stay away from customers.

    This finance manager should be fired.

    Thats assuming they knew they were wrong...it truly may be the dealer's management gives them mininformation
