Don't wait too long, not only will you loose reverse, you won't go forward. The traction battery starts the ICE.
are u mechanically inclined and comfortable with working with HV magruder? from what it sounds like, although some may not agree it sounds like you have some bad modules or bad module on your battery. this is exactly what happened on my 01, it would go from full battery to 1 bar in a very sudden time period and then the triangle will pop up. finally i fixed it by replacing the OEM batteries with 2007 prius modules.
I do feel capable of replacing the battery properly and without electricuting myself. I found a local battery from a 2007 with 26K miles for $400. I'm planning on taking the modules apart though, I just want to remove and replace the whole battery. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I was wondering, won't the warning light that says the HV battery voltage is low come on before the battery goes completely dead?
Hi Dave, In your OP you indicated that the hybrid system warning icon came on. That constitutes sufficient warning of a serious problem. When the traction battery is bad, sometimes the hybrid system icon comes on, other times the traction battery warning icon comes on.
Usually when the HV battery is going bad youll notice a loss of power. For me on my 2001 prius the engine would rev really high and top speed felt like 40 mph. also what you mentioned with the battery going from full to red in 1 minute is a indicator also. its very likely that the battery has bad modules and need replacement, it might just be 1 module. considering your getting a whole battery, i would just swap with the 07 as long as it has the battery ECU. also i have a battery ECU if you need one.
I installed the battery from the 07 Prius. Fortunately, I installed it just enough to test it. The car won't go into ready mode and there are a bunch of warning lights. I checked the voltage on the battery and it is 215 volts so I think it is charged. Is it possible that the new ECU doesn't work with my 04 model? Should I put the ECU from the old battery into the new one? Or is there something else that could be the problem? Thanks, Dave
did you put al the plugs in the sockets. i know you did but you never know just check also did you click the HV fuse into place... and if you stil have the old ECU and you dont think there is a problem with it there is now reason to even replace it with a newer one.
That was my first thought also. I checked carefully for any connections I might have forgotten. I suppose I could put the old battery back in and see if it works, then I would know for sure. Thank you
the battery itself is 100& the same.. so that can not be the problem maybe you still need to clear the codes from you old hv battery failure?
I only replaced the ECU because the new battery came with the ECU. I have tried putting the old ECU in now, but that didn't help.
Yeah, I don't think I have the equipment for that. I'll try putting the old battery back in. If the old battery works again, then there is something going on with the new battery I guess.
I would really double check that orange lock-down connector...there's an extra 'snap' and if isn't completely down you won't have a secure connection and will get all the warning lights you mention. If you're positive that's not the problem then I don't know what else to suggest.
