I am a Prius newbie and bought a 2010 Prius II yesterday. I have a week or so, until it is delivered, to decide on buying any warranty. I have been advised NOT to purchases Extended Service warranty but I wondered what people think about the "simoniz" (?) finish treatment/warranty and the warranty on the hybrid part of the engine. I would appreciate your thoughts.

The hybrid parts (battery, associated wires, inverter, elec. motors) are warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles except in CA-emission states where it's 10 years/150,000 miles for the hybrid stuff and 15 years/150,000 miles for the battery.

And I usually decline any dealer added wax and protection. I prefer to wax my own vehicle.

    Hi Naoko4:

First, and foremost, welcome to PriusChat and congratulations on choosing a Prius for your new set of wheels! Having purchased my first hybrid on September 1st, 2009 and enjoying it very much I am sure you will as well.

That being said, you stated that you have been advised 'NOT' to buy the Extended Care Protection from Toyota, but whether you should buy the ECP from Toyota is something that YOU should decide for yourself. The only reason I say this is that you will have persons on this forum or elsewhere either recommending that you don't (which you already have) or do buy it with the meter tilting in favour of not buying it and each having their valid points. However, what it boils down to is how comfortable are you with your car not having any problems that are not covered outside the 3 Year initial Bumper to Bumper Warranty and as TP stated the additional coverage for certain Hybrid Components.

So having said that take the ECP folder that you can get from the Toyota Dealer and read it through (fine print and all), see what type of offer they will make for the warranty, compare it to the price that you can get from Warranty Shack for PriusChat Members and armed with this info make a decision that YOU will in the end feel comfortable with. And even if you don't decide to go through with it right away you always have the option of buying it on or before the end of the 'original' warranty expiring.

Hopefully this will give you some food for thought.

    All the best.....

    :welcome:

The "simoniz" is not worth it, a joke, I had it on my last car and I had 2 bug stains on the exterior within a month after it was applied, and as the interior I personally do not think it did anything, others may say it did not stain but who knows if it would have stained without it! I personally think the new fabric on most anything today comes with some kind of stain proof, my 2005 Prius (all cloth inside) did not have anything extra and that never stained!
On the warranty I agree with Edward Walsh, but for me I have it now on one of my 2010 IV prius (7year, 100k, cost me $1090 Thu dealer) and plan on getting it for my 2010 Prius V w/AT (8year 100k or 125k not sure yet, I have 3 years 36k to decide) from Troy on here (he has great prices), Too many electronic parts (one thing goes wrong, it will most likely pay for itself, piece of mind for me).

    Where are you purchasing from?

    Hope this helps
    Don

I would definitely pass on the interior/exterior treatment. It's just another way for the dealer to make a profit. If you like the warranty and they will match the price from Warranty Shack, I would just finance it in with your car if you are one that holds onto cars for a long period of time.

I don't know how you arranged financing (you might have paid cash) but definitely check around on rates. That was my biggest margin in F&I. Back in the day on 740+ players, I could submit anything to BofA and I knew I could get at least 2 points (my buy rate was 4.5 and I was charging 6.5) on top of the other "useless crap" I sold.

If you did finance it, run the #'s on a payment calculator. You will be able to see if there is any "leg" in the payments so the F&I person will have an easier time selling you stuff. Most of you here would be disgusted if you knew how dealerships work. I was in the business for 8 years so I am talking from experience.

Thanks for your good wishes and feedback. I didn't know about Warranty Shack and good to know I have a lot of time to learn more before I decide.

Thanks for pointing this out. It does seem like a long time without buying additional coverage.
