Oil Change 2010 Prius - do it yourself

I personally greatly prefer quarts size since I can be precise and not go over.
I've never noted there is any price break on buying the 5 quart size anyway.

 

How far does the front of the car need to be raised in order to change oil?

 

I would think its not that critical unless you mean for the flap to fall completely down.
But I see your point, if the flap does not fall completely down, it could be difficult to get the oil drain pan underneath in the right spot.
Until I actually do it, I guess I don't really know, but from the pics I saw on Johns site, it looks like it shouldn't be a problem.

I personally have to put my ramps at the end of the driveway "where it angles down" so when I drive onto, it doesn't it the underbody of the car.

At least I had to do this with the GenII, I'm assuming this will be no different in that respect..

I got my magnetic oil plug yesterday!... I"ll be placing that when I finally do my change.

I've been hearing allot of good things about Castrol "Edge" as being 8 times better than Mobil one. I don't know if thats grossly exaggerated or at worst its still "better" than mobil one?

I don't think they make the "Edge" in 0w-20W" that I can find. you have to go to their basic synthetic to get that.
Anybody done any homework on that one?

 

I am took a road trip from Cleveland OH to Key West. I am at 4,800 miles on the car. The Oil Change Warning started to come up as documented at 4,500 miles. I was shocked I could not find info on how to reset it on any of these forums.

It is listed in the manual as Mr. Bill mentioned. For the next guy that searches the forums here is the info.

1.) turn car on
2.) set the Trip to ‘Trip Mode A’
3.) turn the car off.
4.) press the MPG button on the dash, press the break pedal, press the start button.
5.) the car will start and a box will pop up claiming the oil warning is being reset. A progress bar will scroll across the screen.

This is different then previous years. FYI – I changed my oil at 1,000 miles with Mobil One. I will change it again when I get home.

 

There is a post on here somewhere, where the author recommends having the front tires at least one foot off the ground.

 

Is that only for when you get a green light, or anytime your going under 50mph?

 

A foot is awfully high, haven't seen any ramps that high. Rhino ramps raise it enough.

I followed the oil change instructions from John1701 (John's Stuff - Toyota Prius Maintenance - Changing Oil) because I'm more comfortable supporting the car with jackstands than getting it up on a ramp.

A jackstand height of 16" allows adequate clearance. If I'm thinking and measuring correctly, this would be equivalent to a ramp height of about 9".

My Prius resets a little easier.
1. Trip A as in Mr. Bill's post.
2. Shut car off, no need to put it in park.
3. Hold MPH/KM button down and start the car, continue to hold the MPH/KM button until the reminder resets, no need to continue holding start button.

I may have just been lucky, but mine resets this way.

 

That's how I have done mine also, works fine.
