If you want to find out about the HUD, check out the new 2010 RX at Lexus.ca or lexus.com It shows the speed, radio and nav instructions (radio and nav share the same real estate and are invisible if nothing is applicable). The HUD is height adjustable.
Heads Up Display, projects info on your windshield, actually very similar to what we have for our digital display, which reflects onto screen on dash.
I would just love the hud... well really die for for one... This would be SOOO very Cool.. darn lawyers getting in the way of us getting the really neat stuff over here across the pond... now I am sad knowing that other countries will have the option of HUD on a Prius... OH well I have seen a HUD display .. it was on a Old Oldsmobile Toronado Troféo
Is the Lexus/Toyota HUD projected images focused at infinity ? (meaning as if you are reading the figures virtually at a distance) Helps reduce eyes fatigue.
It should be, otherwise it is not a true HUD, which incidentally has been a standard option in the aerospace industry for at least 30 years. But in aerospace cost tends to be secondary to safety, since the speeds are somewhat higher. I happen to think that the current depiction of key travel data on my current 2008 Prius is a great improvement on the old thru-the-steering-wheel displays we used to have. It may not be a true HUD, but the eye movement required is probably less than 5 degrees, with a minimum of re-focus. OK with me.
i looked at a newish corvette several years ago here in cali and it had the HUD. I really wish there were more information out there as to why we do or don't get specific features like this. If nothing else, it would make sense for toyota to offer them as dealer installed accessories or DIY kits, as they already paid for the engineering to make it... Anyone heard of attempting a retrofit of the 2010 euro HUD into an american model?
The HUD is available on the Oz Prius. So far only got to use it on a long test drive. Controls are Shows speed horizontal bar display for economy but can have the other column graph displays on the main display shows turn arrow and distance to turn from sat nav but not continuously but at approx 800 metres and 300 metres and then just at turn. I assume these distance will change as speed increases as even an 800 metre warning at highway speed is leaving things a bit late. There are buttons to turn on and cycle through the speed/eco display move the display up and down to suit drivers height set the brightness (did not get a chance to see if the brightness also varied with the brightness of the other instruments) If you get sat nav another button controls its display. The satnav info, when displayed, cuts out the speed and eco display. Still got a month to wait for mine and then I will be able to explore it fully. David
Love the HUD :cheer2: No more taking your eyes off the road to look at the instruments or the sat nav directions...a great safety feature. :thumb: Never quite understood why if you want to reduce costs you build cars to different specifications for different markets (within the limits of local safety and enviromental legislation).
