Cleaning out broken glass

    Unfortunately, a week ago, my month old Prius was broken into. It was during lunch and in broad daylight! Luckily the thief only stole an empty laptop bag. I should have known better and hid it or pull over the hatchback cover.

    Anyway, my hatchback window was smashed and glass went all over my trunk area. My insurance company covered the vandalism and was replaced a day ago. The window replacement went well except for one thing. The repair serviceman tried the best he could, but he couldn't remove the broken glass that was within the door.

    I know it probably doesn't affect anything, in terms of the operation and life of the car, but it is annoying the hell out of me. Every time I open or close the hatchback I hear rattling glass shards going up and down the door.

    Anyone know how to remove the glass? Or how much it would cost to get someone to open up the door (delicately of course!) and clean it out?

    I would call your insurance company and tell them that you are not satisfied with the repair. I would find it unacceptable that a person who replaces auto glass can't remove an interior door panel and complete the job properly. The glass inside the door could lodge in the wiper mechanism or worse a piece could come out and hit someone in the eye. Your insurance company should be more than willing to help you get your car repaired properly, promptly and safely.

    Replace the door, if it "cannot" be fixed.

    Good points. I just assumed the glass was in some place that didn't really affect anything. But as you put it, it could be in some critical/dangerous areas. My co-worker even was worried about being near my rear tail lights, slowly cutting the wires, but I had dismissed it as being somewhere that couldn't cause harm. I would hate these glass pieces to be some ticking time-bomb which could cause damage to my Prius or other cars (or people!) down the line.

    I'll see what I can do about my car. Just wanting a healthy, long-living Prius. :)

    I don't understand how glass could enter into areas inside panels in the rear hatch area. Have to believe that the peripheral area where the rear hatch glass mounts does not have openings for loose particles to fall into. Of course, can't confirm that but it's improbable that the area would be designed that way.

    Again can't see how unless he removed some panels while he was working and chips slipped down. If so, he should have covered the entire area under the glass to catch any pieces as he was scraping off the still-adhered glass.

    As other folks suggested - definitely call your insurance and lodge a complaint. Ask them where you could bring your car to have this problem verified and fixed. You should definitely not have to live with this - if none are left at least you'd have piece of mind that it was checked out. Sorry you're going though this.

    broken auto glass is like Christmas tree needles. You bring a tree in once, and you find the needles to years and years.
