Has anyone used the KD Tools 65mm end cap wrench (KD-3253) on the Gen III oil filter cap? I have seen cautions about using the 65/67 combination wrenchs.
    I have seen posts that claim a 64mm x 14flutes is necessary.
On other Toyota forums there are claims that the KD-3253 is the tool of choice. Are the Corolla, Tundra, and Camry the same size as the Prius GenIII ? One would think so.
What is your experience And what tool do you use?
Has anyone used the tool w/three fingers that tighten or loosen on the filter depending on which way it is turned. These come in various sizes and can work well on a very tight filter.
Bought Napa filters (same as WIX) for $4.14 OTD.

I ordered the 64mm wrench, but used a strap wrench before it came in. The strap wrench worked fine and didn't leave a mark on the housing. I would be hesitant to use the 65/67. I would first check availability and price of the housing. They may be in stock and cheap, or they may be made from unobtanium:eek:

On edit, the housing is plastic. I wouldn't use the three fingered wrench. It does in fact work really well on metal spin on filters as it crushes the filter and get's a good "bite". It might bust a tight plastic housing

I changed my oil earlier this week and used my Wal-Mart el-cheapo plastic 65 (or so) mm wrench that always worked good on the canister filters used on my Gen2. The next day I ordered a 64 mm, part number TOY640, oil filter wrench and bought a 24 mm socket to fit on it.

The plastic one worked good to get the cap off but when I torqued it to 215 in lbs it turned enough that it jammed on the cap. I worked it off OK using a screw driver but I didn't want it to do that again.

I think you did better than I did. I paid twice that much including shipping. Then I found out it takes a 24mm socket so I had to spend $7 more for one of those. The ebay one looks like it takes a smaller socket.

My dealer maintains that he is not allowed to sell Toyota tools to the public, They would like to, but Toyota strictly forbids them.

Do you really need a wrench? Re: Gen III oil filter wrench

I have seldom used a wrench, even on my ES300 where the filter was difficult to reach by hand. Has anyone removed this filter cartridge by hand? I'm pretty strong and it looks like there is really good access to get you hands on this thing.

I just don't want another oil filter wrench I never use lying around.

I would just go get a cheap one from Walmart.... these things are funny.. sometimes they break free and other times they are tough... IMO.. I'd rather want to know the job is going to be consistently easy and know what to expect... if you ever "can't" get it off, you will be forced to go to the store in the middle of the job or revert to banging on it with something and risk damage too.... its not worth the hassle to not have one IMO....
I've never done Cartridge, but it looks like it could be tougher than the regular type to get off.. but I could be wrong.

It is, your not, it's the drag of the O ring I believe that makes it harder. On a spin on the sealing gasket or O ring just meets up flush with a flat sealing surface, with a cannister, I believe the O ring goes inside of the engine so to speak, so your squeezing the O ring between the engine opening and the outside of the cannister. Hard to explain, but there was a lot more drag on the cannister on removal. I had to use the strap wrench to turn it several turns before it got loose, usually a spin on is loose in a half a turn or so. YMMV

That makes perfect sense to me... the surfaces that move when you turn the canister have more contact area than a simple compression of both sides like with the Cannister type.
The threads themselves are probably no worse at all, its all about the O ring.

I have used the KD #3253 65 mm end cap oil filter wrench on my 2010 Prius and found it worked great. I had to pry mine off with a screwdriver since it fit the oil housing so well.
