Woooo, My first tank fill-up on the pearl 2010 and the pump doesn't stop... gushing out all over that nice new paint. Has anyone had this happen to them? Could it have just been the pump, or is there some design flaw in the tank fill port? I literally have never had this happen on any car at any station - Ever. What say Ya'all?
This happens occasionally at my favorite Shell station and the last time, the clerk said something about 'a filter' needing to be cleaned. But he didn't have the details. What I do now is when I pull into a station, I check the areas in front of pumps to see if there is "kitty litter" on the pavement. If so, I stand by the pump and listen for the 'rising tone' that indicates the filler tube is involved and am ready to 'click off' manually. Bob Wilson
Definitely a pump issue. This happened to me some time ago in Switzerland, before I was driving Prius. Shortly before expecting the pump to shut off I was looking at the dials because I wanted to round off the amount. But it didn't shut off. When I looked down, the gasoline was streaming all over the side of the car and tire onto the ground where a nice puddle had already formed. When the tank is full and the gasoline starts rising in the filler tube, the pump auto shut-off must be activated. The car can not really do a lot.
It happened to me in Carson City, Nevada back in May 2009. I placed the pump on the first slow click detent. I turned away from the pump and heard gas coming out the filler tube with the pump still running. This was the only time it happened and it was a pump issue. Now with over 8,500 miles it never happened again. alfon
I haven't pumped gas in ages. Only when I travel. I always accidentally spill over since I don't know what I am doing. I get gas pump anxiety.
Sound like your filling too fast and or the pump is defective. The auto shut off is not working on that pump. Is this a new gas station to you or is it one that you always fill up?
