DVD Navigation updates

I think you're going to have to get a nav DVD from a Mexican dealer (or junk yard). I could find no easy way to get map data. Tele Atlas bought the company that compiled the geographic data for Denso. A search on their web site didn't find "Mexico". :|[/font:2611534fab]

 

Picqued my curiosity so I did some rudimentary research (looks bleak, from what I can determine):

Note they don't sell the Prius in Mexico and it sure doesn't appear as if the Land Cruiser is available with any kind of a NAV package there (that I could see, at least).

Also, I figured I check the Lexus De México site because a DVD for the Gen 4 NAV on Lexus models should work with the Prius. Slight problem.......there is no Lexus De México site.

I have been able to make a rewritable DVD with only one region on it, so the DVD itself is not so proprietary. You could burn your own DL DVD. There is a thread about this.

As for using a DVD for a lexus, I don't think that will work. It may be true that the data files are the same, but there is a Loading.KWI file on the DVD that initializes the NAV, and that is probably vehicle specific. Now if you can take a Lexus DVD info and replace the Loading.kwi on the Lexus DVD with the one from the Prius DVD, that might work, except that the Loading.kwi may not acknowlege the Mexico data as a region. You might be able to change the mexico region files to match up with a US region number though.

DVD versions 03.1 through 04.1 for the nav system in the '04-05 models use GDT (now part of TeleAtlas) data exclusively, but version 04.2 for the '04-05 and all versions for the '01-03 use NAVTEQ data overlaid with GDT in areas where NAVTEQ doesn't have 'Detailed City' coverage.

Most Toyota and Lexus models use the same Denso navigation systems, so the disks are interchangeable between vehicles from the same model year. However, disks for the system used in 2003 and earlier Toyota and Lexus models and those for the system in most 2004 and 2005 models are not compatible with one another (there's also the special case of the Toyota Matrix, which doesn't use a Denso system). I bought the 2004 update disk for the '01-03 nav system from a Lexus dealer and it loaded perfectly out of the box in my 2002 Prius.

 

In response to the original poster's question: NAVTEQ only recently started offering Mexico coverage (see press release). I don't know whether Toyota/Denso have any plans to incorporate it into their nav systems.

I don't think that the lexus DVDs will work in an 04/05 Prius. I think some have tried and it didn't work. Besides, the lexus DVD is more money.

 

My "map" on my 2005 Prius has some really out of date stuff on it. An interstate extension that was finished 5 years ago doesn't exist (it's really neat to see the nav system show me in outer space when I am on a road. I asked my dealer if there was an update and he said if my Prius is an '05, that is as neww as it gets. Does anyone know if that is true? Is this company that supplies the DVD's able to be contacted directly to see if Toyota is just not spending the money to get newer updates?

I'm pretty sure that Denso buys the most recent data available. It has been my observation that changes and additions to the database can take over a year to make it to DVD (presumably due to the preparation time required to create the disk), but five seems excessive. May I ask what road is involved?

 

That's my version, 4.2. U.S. 35 between Jamestown and Washington Court House, Ohio does not exist on the Nav map. There was another one near where I live that was not there as well, but now I don't remember which one it was. We are kind of rural, so maybe they are busy with where all the people live. LOL

The US 35 freeway in western Fayette County was updated in the database in late 2003. I would expect it to be in the next release.

 

It was sometime within this decade that they changed the exits on the highways here in Flordia from being sequential to correlating with the milepost. I was suprised to find the NAV had that updated. Some new developments in West Pasco also exist. My neck of the woods in Spring Hill have the roads and addresses there, but route guidance says it can't continue off of the main road to my house which is just around the block.

 

I was also told that my 2005 DVD was the latest and greatest (interestingly, my dealer didn't know what I was talking about when I called it a dvd. Once I said maps for the nav system, the light went on)

In my area, Sonoma County, a yarn store which has been in business for 3 years is not listed. Another one, which moved 2 years ago, is still listed in the old location.

Also, I noticed a few streets not listed but don't know how long they have actually been there.

Once a new DVD is available, is there a way to purchase and install it yourself, not through the dealer?

 

You can purchase it from your dealer, or possibly anywhere else you can buy Toyota parts. If you can load a CD in to the CD player, you can install the DVD, especially if you can program your VCR clock.

 

My service rep told me they publish their upgrades once a year in October. Hopefully those of us who are waiting for the upgrade as long as possible before December cut-off for free upgrade will get this latest version.

 

I just received my new Salsa Red Prius on the 8 Jul, it currently has version 4.2 in it. Will I qualify for the free upgrade in Oct or Dec time period? Tell me more about this free upgrade and who qualify for it.

Only 5 years! My 3.1 version has a street that was closed off over 20 years ago! (I am waiting on getting an update incase 4.3 comes out by December.)
