For those interested in keeping track of gas mileage, and if you have a iPhone, I found a nice free app. It is called "VehiCal". I had planned on keeping track of my gas mileage, so I bought a notepad to record the gas purchased, and mileage, and then I was going to transfer that to a spreadsheet. But, since I always have my iPhone with me when driving, this made it much easier. You put your Odometer reading in at the time of you fueling, the total amount purchased, and cost per gallon. The app will then compute the total gas purchased, and your MPG for that leg. It will also give lifetime MPG, lifetime gas purchased, life-time average price per gallon, or MPG stats between any dates youy want to select. It will also keep track of maintainence costs like oil changes, tolls, parking, etc. I know many here use web based sites, or their home PC to do this. But, that involves writing down the info in the car, then transfering that into the house. If you have your phone with you in the car like I do all the time, this is very convenient. You can also email the info from your phone. Like I said, it's a free app, so it is risk-free to check out.
There is a simliar thread on Iphone gas apps- http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-fuel-economy/65153-what-iphone-app-do-you-use.html. Wish I had come across this app earlier. Based on the other thread, I got gascubby, and it is very nice.
I have heard some chatter on this "Prius iPhone" app. Do you, or anyone else, know what it is, or what it will do, or even when it will be released?
Nobody knows the release date, not even the app developer. Apple operates very secretively and can approve it any day of the week. The developer said August, but that's only if they're lucky and it's not rejected multiple times for revisions (which Apple is notorious for). The app developer hasn't volunteered any information on what it'll do so it's anybody's guess at this point. Notice this is different than the mobile website optimized for the iPhone already out m.toyota.com/prius
You can use fuelly.com which kindof does the same thing. For those with an Iphone there are directions on how to add it as an ICON on your iphone so it acts as an app.
Yes, I use the Gas Cubby application, and like the fact that you can track multiple vehicles, including their service history. Best $ 10 I spent on the iPhone.
The only one I could find in appworld was aroind $30. That's nuts!! fuelly.com has a mobile site you can use on the BB. That is what I am going to do. I also have gas cubby on my ipod touch.
I use Road Trip with my iPhone. It is an EXCELLENT app. Comes in two flavors...Road Trip Lite, which is free, and the FULL Road Trip, which is $4.99. I liked the Lite version so much I kicked in for the pay for version. I felt the developer was entitled to the $5 since I used it every fill up. The full version gives you tracking for your maintenance and specific "road trips". It has cool graphs and is extremely easy to use. Check it out.
Let me put in a vote for CarCare for the iPhone. I can't recall how much it was, $3.99 or something? But it's been worth it and the app's creator helped me when I couldn't, for some reason, re-import the data this summer when I installed Iphone 3.0. Very good service from him over many emails. What's great about it is that not only does it track your mpg, it also displays graphs of both mpg and gas price, it also breaks down your car's various costs both to you and the environment, not to mention it has a customizable car repair section with reminders for routine maintenance. I've been extremely happy with it, so please don't take this as some kind of paid endorsement. I just want to see more people using an under-recognized app.
