I'm new to the forum. I just installed the Uhual 1 1/4 Tow Hitch. Now, i got a Yakima Stick up for an unbeatable price. Just wondering anyone here using the stick up bike rack. I ask that question because the stick up rack seems like a little bit heavy, around 58 pounds. Will that be save if i use that for 2 mountain bike? Frankie
I dont have one myself, but I've seen many prii with hitch bike mounts so I assume its not a problem. Hopefully your bikes are the ligher < 30lb variety?
Whoa, 58 pounds for the rack itself? That is indeed rather heavy. I have the same U-Haul-installed Curt 1.25" hitch as you do, and I use an el-cheapo $100 hitch rack I bought at Sports Authority. The rack itself weighs about 15 pounds. I've hauled two 30-pound mountain bikes on it, and I was very nervous seeing the amount of bounce in the whole setup whenever I go over bumps in the road. If you are going to use that 58-pound rack, I would advise you to find ways of running some nylon straps from the top of the rack to the hatch so you don't over-torque the Curt Hitch.
that what i think too. Actually the yakima look pretty strong, the only thing that i concern is the hitch and car frame.
I have the same (Curt) hitch with 1 1/4 receiver and the Stickup rack. I've used it for a year. It works great and there's little or no bounce with two adult bikes on it. Just make sure you really clamp down the tire cinch and firmly pull down the arm on your top tube. If you do that, the bikes are solid and won't move at all in the rack. I was too gentle once and the bike fell off (luckily little damage).
Just remember the 200lb tongue weight limit and you should be fine. I'm actually installing my hitch today after work and bought an el-cheapo Bell brand 2 bike carrier for 20 bucks.
