I am going to switch to Synthetic oil at 10,000 miles (I have 5,000 now) and I was wondering what triggers the maintenance light to come on. Since the oil i wish to use is rated at 12,000 miles, I was wondering if I would have to reset the light after driving 4800 miles, or if it comes on when it decides that the engine oil is dirty and should be replaced.
    Thanks for your input.

It comes on based strictly on mileage, and the interval is factory set to 5,000 (with an earlier warning blink). There's no provision for you to change it to another value. But you can reset it off when it lights up.

You should be aware that your warranty requires oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals. That may modify your decision in one direction or another.

The light actually comes on 5000 from the mileage at the last reset, so if you want 10,000 you will have to reset it when it first comes on and then change oil at the next time it comes on.

Read your warranty carefully, it could be necessary to provide receipts for oil at 5000 mile increments. That dosen't mean that you have to actually change the oil at that time.
