Unfortunately, you can't get the HUD in the United States.

Yes the head up display does display navigation instructions, no, you can't have one unless you move out of North America.

Thank you Toyota for giving me something else to tease the yanks with now that Prius comes with seat height adjustment in the US.

Is the HUD available in Cananda? I really want that and the rain sensing wipers. I have it in my Mercedes and really will miss it. I get so bugged when I'm in someone's car and their wipers are on when it's not raining. I'm this close to buying a Prius V with ATP but am hoping that they revamp their packages and take out the headlight cleaners and have a fully loaded prius minus leather seats.

Wait, can I buy a car in Canada and use it in the US?

 

Get the 2010 Lexus RX450h which will have everything you want in a hybrid.

 

Too expensive. Just the extra money for maintenance is too much on a Lexus. I just wanna replace some options that are on the car available in the US (headlight washers and leather) with two options availble overseas (HUD and rain sensors). I'd be buying one right now if i could.

 

Don't forget the side indicators in the mirrors and the Auto-on lights that we get and the US cars don't.

 

I wan't the HUD! The frustrating thing is I probably will get my Prius this year, and I just know that next year they will probably offer the HUD.

Anyone know if it's something you could have installed aftermarket?

It is frustrating because you look at the HUD, Seat Adjustment, Side Mirrors, and what Toyota offers as packages, coupled with geographic differences and availability and you have to wonder how Toyota makes the decisions they make. I can't imagine HUD adds too much weight, nor side signal mirrors, for me the HUD is the option not available in the US that I envy the most. If they are worried about cost? Make it a full accessory option..hopefully stand alone and not tied to a $2000 dollar pkg with 5 things I don't want.

 

Don't be so sure about that. They won't equip the Prius with too much luxury stuff so as to avoid competition with the Lexus HS 205h hybrid, and the fully-loaded Prius already has the technology package found only on high-end Lexus.

 

Whaaaaat!!!????? :frusty: Are they mad!!!!??? That is by far the best new feature of the Gen III (after the lower fuel consumption of course). It is absolutely awesome, really a huge safety feature.

 

HUD is pretty cool and all that, but "by far" the best new feature?
Of course it's all just a matter of opinion... but really, how often will you actually be looking at the HUD?
How many accidents are caused because someone is looking at their speedometer? Don't most wrecks involve alcohol, or talking on cell phones, or texting, or some otherwise unnecessary and unsafe behavior?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have the HUD, but I'd much rather have the sunroof and solar ventilation.

 

To put it into perspective, HUD is an $1,200 MSRP option on the 2010 Lexus RX.

There's no country that has ALL the options available. Even the European Prius is missing a couple of options.

 

Having played around with the HUD a bit, I personally didn`t see the reason for all the hype. It certainly wasn`t worth it to us to upgrade to a package including it.
I found the little "rough" spot on the windshield where it is projected to be far more annoying than the futuristic advantage of having it appear. In test driving, I personally just wanted it gone as it was the opposite of safety and kept bothering me - like a smashed bug or something.
It`s cool to think about and probably to show off, but I wouldn`t want it.

 

I'm starting to find the Tracer Display gimmicky, and just in the way of the other data. Don't know how I feel about HUD, except to say they changed the name to HHS about 20 years ago.

 

I have the HUD display speed and HSI. I don't have to really take my eyes off the road to check my speed and keep the throttle in the ECO area. It is projected about where the hood ends, that means less refocusing. It is never in my line of sight. I never look at the normal speedometer and it doesn't bother me at all.

Compare it to a nav system. That can be pretty distracting too, especially if it's new and you are still trying to find out how it works. But if you're accustomed to it and use it properly, it really helps you to focus on traffic instead of your route.

I think the distraction of the HUD lies in the fact that it's new and 'cool'. So a short test drive is certainly not enough to properly evaluate it. After a few weeks you'll get used to it and use it as intended.

But if you really don't like it, you can switch it off.

 

The HUD is one of the really good innovations on the Generation 3 Prius. It is less likely to cause accidents, as the speedo (and navigation direction arrows, if Navi is fitted) are right in your field of view and do not require the driver's eyes to leave the road or view ahead at all.
It is both height and brightness adjustable, so can be set for anyone's preference.

I do have the sunroof/solar as well as HUD, and the HUD is at least equal in usefulness in my humble opinion.

 

In France we have the HUD and the side mirror with turn signals. We also have auto headlight and leveling on the highest model that features LEDs.

On the other hand, we cannot have the lane keep assis nor pre-collition system.

I'm glad we have the HUD. Once you get used to it... well...
