I hope this will be helpful to anyone who might be undecided whether to order a III or IV based on the cloth/leather issue.

I've had my blue 2010 III for a month and a half. We've always preferred cloth upholstery for comfort, and have found it to be extremely durable on previous cars--all Hondas. (After 10 or 15 year of use, the upholstery was always in great condition.) When selecting our Prius, we leaned toward the III, which we ultimately ordered. But we toyed with the idea of ordering a IV simply because we were unfamiliar with the Toyota cloth, and were able to see only a leather Prius before ordering. We also wondered whether the IV seat might be more comfortable than the III because of the lumbar support. So for anyone having the same indecision, I'm reporting in.

Although obviously I can't comment on durability, I want to say that we LOVE the cloth upholstery. The feel of the cloth is great, and here in the South we wear shorts much of the time, so we hate when leather seats get hot, and also when they feel sticky on the skin. Although this cloth is different from any we've had previously (Honda), it's got a suede-like feel that's ultra-comfortable. We also like the way it looks. Finally, we like the shape of the seats, and don't miss the lumbar feature, although I'm sure it's nice.
    :)

This is why I wanted the III over the IV. I love the cloth seats I have now. We ended up going for the IV and I worry about feeling like I am sticking to the seat and how hot it will be in summer. Especially if we end up with the darker gray.

I can report on leather, its nice, leather breathes, and its not as bad as people believe, I will never not have leather in a car, and I live in a very hot area.

Yep, I had leather in 3 previous cars before my 2006 Prius. Then I was forced to get cloth since my region chose not to get leather. I FINALLY have leather again in my 2010 and will never get another car without it. It breathes just fine, I've never burnt my legs on it in the summer (we do get plenty of hot weather around here during the summer months) and it just makes the car feel so much more upscale. When I drive my dads Prius III it just feels like a different car.

That being said, the cloth is not bad, its just not for me. Everyone will have different opinions on this and there is nothing wrong with that...

The IV without NAV is available in this region. Count me in as another one who prefers leather. I don't wear shorts usually, and find the leather easier to slide in and out of rather than the cloth - no worries about getting your undies in a bunch. :p

Once considered the III, but had to go with leather because of two small kids. Spills on cloths are a bitch.

Sounds like you are in a similar situation . . . I bought a pkg III and opted to have leather (and heated seats) installed after-market, since I was not willing to pay the premium for the technology package that comes with the IV. The installation was arranged through the dealer - they outsource it to a local shop that specializes in this - so that when I took delivery the leather seats were already installed. We got light gray leather, which nicely complements the winter gray metallic exterior and is very comfortable.

Price was $1299 for the leather and $475 for the heated seats. I've only had the car a couple weeks, but so far am pleased with the leather. It did not quite look like factory leather (there were a couple places where the leather was not as tight as it could have been) but overall the shop did a really good job.

That was another reason I wanted leather in my 2006, but when I was forced by my region back then to get cloth, I went out and bought 2 cans of scotch-guard. Trust me, it works wonders... It's like rain-x for cloth...

I already sprayed my dads cloth interior with it.

We just bought our 2nd Gen 3 Prius 3, I sat in the Prius 4 and they wanted $3000 more for it at the dealership here in PA.

The only difference I saw was Leather Heated seats, auto tinting rearview mirror and dual garage door openers on mirror, Plasma cluster air purified system. Special rain beading glass. While I really like leather, it is not worth $3000 to me. For $3000 I can reach up and flip the mirror myself. The heated seats might be good for a back ache, but I am decended from Northern Europeans, I am very comfortable sitting outside on a frozen chair in the winter with a sweater drinking coffee and the snow around me. A cold leather seat doesn't bother me. :) The air purifier is nice, my wife has allergies and I may have said ok for that just for her, but it is $3000. That's a lot of boxes of tissue. lol. Rain beading glass while is neat, again not workth $3000 to me. The car was for my wife so I let her decide and she opted for the Prius 3. $3000 is a lot of money to me and this being the second Prius I bought in 2 months. I am getting tapped out of money for cars. The Prius 3 is a nice car and I have two of them. Still wishing Toyota had a buy 2 get 1 free policy. lol.

You won't get the back up camera without NAV, it is really nice for seeing in that blind spot and allows a perfect back up parking everytime. Wish they had a front bumber cam as well as the front of the Prius sits so low, it would be easy to drive into a curb or parking place barriers. I find myself being very cautious and parking back a little and finding I could have pulled in nose first 2 more feet. I am getting better at judging where the front of the car is, but I will really be bummed the day I bump a curb.

That will never happen backing into a parking place with the camera.

Thanks for the comments on the leather. :) I was worried about burning my behind on such dark seats. I've only ever had vynl or cloth.

Did they put in the switches to turn on the seat heaters just like the IV has, or are they in a different location?
    Thanks in advance

I've had both and although leather is nice I prefer the cloth.
I feel it is a personal preference each person has their likes and dislikes. My highway car has leather and it is wonderful on long drives. My daily driver that is being handed over tomorrow for the C4C has cloth seats. For every day use I will always go with cloth.
With 370K miles I replaced the OEM front covers once and it wasn't cheap. Leather based on what members are paying for after market is about the same price as I paid just for the covers for my front seats.

Yes. The point I was making in my original post was that I had ordered the cloth with a bit of trepidation because I hadn't seen it. I was thinking that if anyone was in a similar situation, it might be helpful to hear that the cloth is extremely nice. And comfortable.

If you don't like the leather, we can swap. Mine is a magnet for my Dalmatian fur (she was in it once for 10 minutes), and leather would have been so much easier.

I debated going with a IV for the leather and didn't care about the other features of the IV other than 3 door SKS. I had read about how the cloth was cheap and the adjustable lumbar support with the IV was great, etc. I was a little worried that I would regret going with a III because of the cloth...

Well, I got a III, and I am very happy with the cloth, I think it is far from cheap and actually feels great. Cleans up great as I have a 4 year old who eats in the car when we are on the way to different events. So far all the stains have come out without a problem just using a damp rag. She got chocolate on the seat belt, and that is the only thing I had trouble getting out (and this would have been the same with leather)...but it came out with a tide pen. The lumbar support is fine and the seats are fine.
Bottom line, I like the cloth and I would think most people will be happy with the cloth. But we'll see how the cloth ages over the next 10 years I plan on having this car.

I've always had leather and didn't like the hot car and hot seats in summer and cold seats in winter. But the leather wears well, so like I said I was concerned going with cloth. But so far, I like the cloth better than leather and I hope it wears well. If not, I could always have the seats redone with cloth for not to much.

Picked up my III today and I love the cloth seats. Never sat in a Prius with leather so I can't compare the two. Being it is light tan I'm definitely going to need to get covers for the front seats.

I sat in 3, 2010 prius's (priori?) while looking for the right one to buy. Outside temp was a 97 humid degrees. Two of the 2010's (black, blue) were leather and one was a dark gray suede cloth. While all were really beautiful, I did not care for the heat I perceived radiating from the leather interior. I was wearing shorts and it was super hot. My suggestion is--leather interior, then get the solar roof. The gray cloth is so suede like, comfortable and I haven't been bothered by a hot day yet. Winter is starting to look like it might be comfy as well. :)

Does leather interior in PriusIII include leather trimmed door panels?
