I have a '04 Prius with 40,000 miles. My tires (GoodYear P185/65R15) started to go bald in spots at 30,000 miles. I've heard there are other complaints about tire wear on the Prius. Has any other Prius 04 Owners had similar problems?

Moderators, why is this thread showing up on the calendar?

Moby, the Goodyear Integrity tires that came with your Prius were very much mid-line. Now you can get Goodyear ComforTreds, in the same size as the original tires, and get a quiter ride, better handling, and longer tread life.

Did you rotate your tires regularly?[/font:c626f456fc]

Thanks Bill

Dear Bill,

To answer your question, Yes, I have had my tires rotated more than reccommended by the Mfg. I was suprised and pissed I had to notice the uneven wear myself first since I have had the tires rotated so often always at Toyota exclusively.

Do other owners have tires running out so fast. GoodYear says they are supposed to last 50,000 miles.

I wouldn't have had to post if I knew how to use this site better. I'm not used to user group web sites. For instance, I went to the FAQs to learn how to reply. Couldn't find the answer so I'm trying this as a reply. Hope it gets to you. Now you know why the calendar has this post. I don't quite know how to use this web site/service.

Thanks for replying!

Dear Seasalsa,

Do you have any information for me?

Do other owners have tires running out so fast? GoodYear says they are supposed to last 50,000 miles. I exclusively go to Toyota for all my services, 3000 mile oil changes and tire rotations.

I wouldn't have had to post if I knew how to use this site better for researching my question. I'm not used to user group web sites. For instance, I went to the FAQs to learn how to reply. How is the calendar supposed to be used anyway?

Thanks for replying!

Whaley,
No, I only have about 22,000 miles on my original tires and they show very little wear. The first generation Prius had some tire problems but this is the first that I have heard of excessive wear on the 2004 or later.

Dear Moby,

I wasn't complaining about your post showing up in the calendar, just asking the moderators to take it off. The calendar mostly shows birthdays and some events like the Symphony Prius Raffle which ended yeaterday. If you put your message on the calendar by accident, the moderators or Danny needs to make it a bit more difficult to put items on the calendar.

I can understand why you would be irritated if the Toyota dealership rotated your tires and didn't mention the wear. That is not right. With that much wear and the tires rotated frequently, I'd imagine you have an alignment problem. This is something the dealer should have noticed and offered to fix on your new car.

I'd suggest two things: Try to get your dealer to pick up part of the cost of new tires, since they should have noticed and told you and fixed the alignment, and then find a new dealer.[/font:2bf0ca6f51]

My '04 is around 40k as well. I rotate every 10k miles.
I'd estimate that I'll get 60k from my stock tires.

MY OEM tires weren't worn out, but I junked them when a drive to Connecticut generated enough reimbursement money to pay for a new set.

With the Goodyear TripleTreds I have on now, I can accelerate as I please with no traction control issues. My MPGs are down 10% (hopefully to recoup some later as the tires wear), but the car is more fun to drive...

Moby, you can make one reply and we will all see it. Bit unnerving to see an inch for each personal reply.

Think of a forum as a group conversation. If someone asks a question, we all see it, and any one of us replies, and we all see the reply. Now if you do a PM (Personal Message), then only that person will see your message in their inbox. Personally, I don't like people asking questions via PM unless it is personal as others can't benefit from it.

Another way to think of a forum is an open letter to the editor, except it is an open post/reply to the group for all to see.

i dont have the mileage that you have yet but at 13,500 miles, my tires have worn about one mm. i have a depth gauge on my tire pressure gauge and i have been at about 5-6 mm now. when new the tires were at 6-7 mm.

so if i have 3-4 mm of wear left, that would leave me at 54,000-67,000 miles total. i do my own rotations at 5,000 mile intervals. run 40/38 psi in winter, 42/40 summer

I have just over 10k on my 05 Prius already- in 3 months- I live in the mtns, and my 2 front tires are worn really really bad! I am hoping to get them rotated this weekend and hope to save them! I am very dissappointed with these tires.

Speaking of 10k miles, I just got an oil change today- it's getting old real fast- that nobody even knows how to turn on this crazy little car! I am tired of having people work on my car that don't know anything about it- and my nearest TOY dealer is an hour away- guess I am going to have to take off work from now on.

As the original post mentioned tires going bald in spots, I think that the front end alignment ought to be confirmed. If there is 'edge wear', consider higher than Toyota-recommended inflation pressures.

Did you get a little pad of "valet" instructions? It at least tells them how to drive the car. I think I also saw Spanish and Italian versions as PDFs someplace here on PriusChat.

Other than driving the car onto the lift, an oil/filter/tire rotation is standard.[/font:bf6ed689eb]
