Important in what way? As in... will my tank get messed up if it breaks off and falls down into the tank? Maybe. As in, if I rip it out through the opening and toss it aside, will my car blow up? Not likely. I'd figure the little flapper thing is just there to help mitigate evaporation. As long as you screw the cap back on after filling up, you shouldn't have to worry about anything.
