Took the 2004 prius to get it inspected today and the inspection people could not get their equipment to talk to the car through the OBDII connector. This is necessary in Texas to pass inspection. A couple of days prior to this the Display Module had to be replaced by the Dealer because it was not updating properly. Some possibilities 1 OBDII connector does not work with normal scanners 2 When replacing display, cable was knocked loose or some other tech related cause. 3 Inspector had faulty equip or improper knowledge( we took to another inspection station and they had same problem) Does anyone have any insight Thanx Ray
when was the car built? as the early ones were not OBD11 compliant. The SSC-40-D was to address this problem. It could also be that the testing station's software isn't current enough to test the CAN protocol in the 2K4-5 Prius. Ask the testing station if the Prius is listed as a vehicle that the testing software can actually handle. Make sure it can read the year of you Prius. If not tell them they are not current to be testing vehicles and as such should close thier doors.
Thanks Frank, It was a 2004. Do you mean the early prius'es or the early 2004's. The error they say they are getting is no communication. I wonder if there is something specific I can ask them to determine if they have compatiable software. Thanks Ray
it was the early 2k4 model that wasn't OBD11 compliant. I'm not sure when and what the SCC-40-D applied to in the US as we got a different service bullitin here in Canada. I do know that CAN and the standard OBD11 connections are different soft ware wise. Maybe others can inject more in to this thread.
Owners needing SSC-40A were notified starting January '04. VINs KB20U 40001009 – 40012242 KB22U 40001142 – 40012271 were affected. 40A was superceded by SSC-40D with owner notification starting May '04. Affected VIN range: KB20U 40001086 – 40053733 KB22U 40001142 – 40053728 Gee, shouldn't they have started SSC-40D at 4001009 for KB20U, as they did for SSC-40A? The 2G prius does require CAN communication, so the shop needs that ability. Some items can be obtained through SIL though. Check that you have 12V at pin 16 of DLC, and ground at pins 4 and 5. But you should be under warranty to get this fixed by the dealer. Could be considered an item covered under emissions warranty.
You don't need to be under warranty in order to have a Recall (big "R") performed for free. SSC-xxx indicates a recall; Toyota is obliged by federal law to perform this service at no charge.

Thanks everybody for the great responses. It seems that our car is one of the affected ones. We will take it to the dealer and let them resolve. I appreciate the trouble DanMan that you went to to put those Vin Numbers out. Thanks Ray
