Hey everyone. I bought my 2010 Prius II on 6/30/09. At the time I bought the car for fuel efficiency. Now i find out my company wil pay gas. I wanted a BMW 3 series and I could have gotten a gently used 2007 325I for the same price i spent on ym new prius.
It has 900 miles on it, Prius II white pearl.
I also bout the 100,000 toyota extended warranty for $1300 and theft protection for $500 and paid all of th sales tax. Msrp was $23,100 plus all of the things I just discussed, i had a good trade so after the roughly $25000+ transaction I owe about 17,000 on the car. If i try to sell it or tade it in, do you think I will get killed???

I dont want to end up throwing away thousands of dollars for nothing, if it doesnt make sense selling it, I will keep it.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

Considering it's only slightly used, has the extended warranty and demand is still pretty good, I'm thinking you could sell it for about $1000 under MSRP...$22,000. If you plan on selling, I would do it now because with gas heading toward $2.00, it probably wont be long before they are selling for a good bit under MSRP.

Your best bet would be to try and outright sell it to someone.
I'm pretty sure you'd take a substantial loss if you traded it in.
You've had it for a few weeks, put nearly a thousand miles on it, and the title is in your name. It's not new anymore.
If you really want to get rid of it, put an ad in the paper/Craig's List/wherever ASAP.
I'm sure someone out there will scoop it up for hopefully not too much of a loss to you...especially if the 2010 Prius is scarce in your area right now.

Go talk to the person who sold you the car, and see what amount they'd give you for a trade in.

Thats good news, I could swallow a $1000 hit, but i wont accept a $5000 hit. I didnt get what i wanted from the toyota dealer for my trader either. If i can sell for $22,000, I would have 5k left to put down on the BMW. If not, ill just keep the car, I do like it. But not exactly me.. so to speak.

Ill put it on craigslist and see what happens. If anyone here is interested, I might let it go for 22k. A steal considering the new condition, extended warranty and i already paid sales tax and license for the year. Anyone in the Phoenix/ Tucson market interested. Send me a message.

    Thanks

If you end up getting a gently used 2007, make sure it is certified by BWM and you have the maintenance paid by them. Otherwise repairs on those cars can become quite spendy. I know, I've owned one.

Considering that it sounds like he would be far more happy in the BMW right now, I don't think a long term projection is very useful. At this point, he can take a relatively small loss and get into a car he enjoys.

My analysis is based on the fact that gas seems to have peaked for the summer and prices are now falling. This time last year it started falling and went from ~$4 to ~$2 within 4 months. Of course, you can't use the past to predict the future, but my money is on $2.00 gas by Halloween. ;)

I appreciate all of the replies so far.. this forum is awesome.
To add to the discussion. Eddie haskel has some great points, I would be much happier in the BMW, its powerfull, super sporty, and luxurious. Everything I want.

My main gripes about the prius is the styling, lack luster performance - compared to most cars, and the strange looks and stigma you get from people who judge prius owners, but who cares about them anyway, i bought the car for me, not them.
But the styling and performance issues are un deniable.

But the prius is great at what it does also, im not trying to compare the two, they are apples and oranges and I see the pros/cons in both.

If i cant get the money I am asking for 22-23k, I will happily keep the prius and not look back. I can buy a BMW in 3-5 yrs, after depreciation has taken its toll, and hopefully after several raises, so i can swing the BMW more easily, and deal with the maintainance and repair costs.

So I put it on Craigslist Phoenix, and I will see what happens, If someone wants to pay what i want, I will be a BMW owner, if not, I will continue to be a proud Prius owner.

Lackluster performance is only if you expect something along the line of a sports car, so I can see where you're coming from. You wanted a BMW in the first place.

The 17" wheels and fog lights do wonders in the styling department.

I think you can sell it yourself for close to what you paid, unless your state charges sales tax on private used car sales...As for $2.00 gas, the NW has not seen that since way before it was over $4.00 and I don't expect to again unless we have a depression (no I am not an economist just a finance major : ). I would rather get out of the recession and see $3.00 gas stay! Finally, if you want performance push the power button. Just kidding - still not a sports car but I love the smooth ride - almost like what I would imagine if I was a light rail driver. Now when I get in my 08 CRV, I feel like I am in a truck and the Pruis feels like a sport car handling wise. What a difference a week makes.

It doesn't make sense selling it, especially if you are replacing it with not a Toyota.
    Just my opinion of course.

When the economy recovers and oil demand climbs back to where it was when it was well over $4/gallon, gas prices will be right back up at the $4/gallon range if not higher before it deals the economy another sucker punch.

This situation is rather awkward. You should consider yourself lucky if you can sell the car for around $22,000. You will definitely take a hit financially. I also want to point out that the 3rd Generation Prius is a great car for reasons other than the spectacular fuel efficiency. On PWR mode, you can essentially drive it like a normal sedan. It has very impressive climate and entertainment features. It's got alloy wheels and scores of safety and driving control features. All of these characteristics of the 2010 Prius have been highly praised in critical reviews. Overall, it's a great car. The fuel efficiency gets the spotlight because the numbers are just so damn amazing, but there are lots of other amazing things about the Prius.

Finally, in this economy, you never know what employment mishaps may arise. What if you lose your job? Then you will look back on the decision to sell the Prius as another major error in your life. My sincere advice is that you keep the car, but I wish you luck whatever you do....

    You sure it's a 2007 325i? I thought the 328i replaced it?

Uhh.. neither the 325i nor 328i are particularly powerful in my book, esp. for the price. I had a 02 255 hp Nissan Maxima (far cheaper than a BMW 3 series in its day, but handling is nowhere near that of a 3-series) and have an 04 287 hp Nissan 350Z. Even family cars like the Altima V6, Accord V6 and Camry V6 have more power (270 hp, 271 hp and 268 hp respectively). Powerful current cars to me conjures up images of at least 290+ hp.

As for certified and maintainance, make sure you know long your "free maintenance" and warranty are good for. After those are gone, you'll find maintenance and repairs to be quite spendy. Is your company paying for these items too? A new BMW 3-series is sure to have inferior reliability to a new Toyota, let alone compared to a 2+ year old BMW. Looking at CR, the 3-series has somewhat hit/miss reliability.

Oh yes, this also rang a bell for me. See http://priuschat.com/forums/other-c...es-cars-have-no-dipstick-starting-2006-a.html. I dug up some gems like http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0f828c/54. Blame BMW for a stupid design decision. I have no qualms w/them adding a sensor. Adding a sensor then removing a cheap strip of metal that is a pretty reliable means of checking oil levels is dumb IMHO.

I paid $2.279/gal for my last tank of gas and we are still on summer formulation (it will drop when we go back to winter). Where it may not hit $2.00/gal, his point is valid. We're not headed for $4.00/gal gas again anytime soon, but I do believe we will see it again and more in the years ahead. Not my field of expertise, but I buy raw materials in my business that are pegged to crude oil and nat gas purchases so I have access to professional analysis.

I can't figure out why you bought a Prius in the first place????

If it's saving money and you're willing to drive a used car, then a used car will save you more than a new car just about everytime (other than maintenance issues _3 year old BMW?). In just economic terms, you'll have to save a lot in gas to justify a new car. Where I'm confused is it doesn't even seem like saving money is an issue as you're willing to eat what you lost in a trade on the Prius and then eat what you lose in selling the Prius in order to get a used BMW. That's a three way loss in my book

If it's to save gasoline (for political and patriotic reasons) then having a Prius and having the gas reimbursed too is a double bonus.

Being Green doesn't sound like it's in the picture here so we'll skip that.

You're confusing me. You should simply get what you want unless you are motivated to go green or save gas. If it's sporty fun you want then the BMW should have been what you bought first and saved a lot of money.

(Are you the same person I gave "fatherly advise" to on Edmunds a few months back?)

To give you an idea ...

I sat down with the dealer about trading in my 2009 (before I fixed the seat), which was a bit over $30k OTD ....

The sales manager said 'It's like this .... the trade in negotiations would start at about $15,000 .... '

To which I started laughing in disbelief, said no thanks, then hit the road.
Cured me of any desire to ever trade in a car.

'Course, the manager tried to explain it away as 'well, the economy is just terrible now' This was in early Nov. 2008.

Someone mentioned the title is in his name. No. It's in the lienholder's name, he owes $17k.

anyrate, I suppose theres a way to sell a car with a lien on it.

Around here, there are many new '10's at the dealerships.

Willl be intersting to see what he gets for the slightly used car.

    --------

If I was driving tight windy roads everyday and hoping to get a thrill, I'd want to sell mine too.

But, I'm nowhere near that, so I just appreciate the ICE shutting off.

(I get kinda bummed when the ICE runs when I think it shouldn't (like to charge the battery when pulling up to the house)) I'm a definite future candidate for a PHEV or EV.

Anyone else get a little bummed when the ICE runs a bit long, like in a parking lot?

If you must sell the Prius to get a corner carver, have you looked into a Mazda 3 or Speed3 hatchback? Big bang for the buck.

    I have 2 questions
1 What if the employer decides to stop paying for the gas?
2 Will the employer paying for your gas be considered income and will you have to pay income tax on it?
