In my Gen II, I thought I had this problem. Try switching from recirc to fresh air. You can be in "auto" mode and change these without leaving that mode (also can do the same with defrost). I believe that if you set recirc, the car remembers that and will maintain it until you go back to fresh air. In fresh air mode, the car decides when to recirc or not recirc.
How about puting a 'dictiionary' of warning light symbols say on the underside of the sun visor? Is there even any room? There seems to be a lot of such symbols and when and if they appear would an instant reference source be useful? Of course there is the manual.
According to the Owner's Manual page 465 the headlight cleaner has it's own fuse. Fuse #7 in the engine compartment fuse box. Why not try removing it? If you want the washers in the winter just put it back in. Can't try it my car isn't here yet.
I have an '04. I know where the 'secret' drawer you refer to is, but where is the small change drawer on the left side of the drivers? The only thing I can see is the narrow storage slot in the center of the lower dash. Is that what you mean?

Done. Went to Ace Hardware and bought 4 flush-head Phillips screws, black with attached washer. Took 5 minutes to replace all. And the new screw does not extend nearly as far as the old bolt, but easy to remove with a screwdriver. A bit of irritant to me as well. Past tense now.
Nice. I didn't notice those bolt heads until they were mentioned here, but they really do look tacky. Time for a trip to Ace.
I agree, it's one of the first things i noticed when i was walking around the car. I have white, so it sticks out like a sore thumb...
Anyone discover the easily removable rubber window insulation? I did last night when I stuck my hand out of the window, knocked it and the whole upper section dropped out of the slot. Luckily it pops back in, but definitely reinforced a feeling of cheapness in the building (that and my ever present dash rattle).
