TOY-SC1/SCC1 lockup

    Today for the 3rd time in about 3 months I started my 2009 Prius; the radio was already turned on, and I noticed the satellite radio would not appear on the MFD when I attempted to select it. To get the radio to recognize the TOY-SC1/SCC1 combo I powered down the car, removed the fuse from the TOY-SC1 for about 5 minutes, put the fuse back in and turned on the car again. The satellite radio was back!:) All my presets were gone.:mad:

    As I indicated previously, this has happened before. The first time I feared I had a loose cable and ripped the dash apart to verify the connections. It was then I discovered that resetting the TOY-SC1 by removing the fuse brought things back to life.

    At this point I started making phone calls to get support. I started with Directed Electronics. (BTW, they're no longer in the Sirius radio business, see link). The tech support person stated that this was a known problem with the 2008-2009 Prius. He indicated that a firmware problem in the TOY-SC1 sometimes caused this lock-up condition when the car was powered up and the TOY-SC1 was doing a handshake with the car radio. He suggested I add a switch to the TOY-SC1 installation so that I could more easily cycle power on the unit next time it happened, without needing to get the fuse. When I asked which wire on the harness to the radio carried power he stated they didn't have that information. He indicated that Directed Electronics didn't actually design/manufacture the unit so that information couldn't be obtained.

    Not happy with this answer, I moved on and called TSS-Radio, the retailer I purchased the unit from. I was surprised to find out that they had the same story about firmware problems and power up sequencing issues. TSS-Radio's advice was that if I changed the way I started the car, the problem wouldn't show up again. Their recommendation was to first hit the power button without my foot on the brake to enter accessory mode, then hit the power button with my foot on the brake to start the car.

    Is this happening to anyone else?

    The one in my 2006 has never done this, so they may be right about it being a '08/'09 specific problem. Bummer!

    It happened to me a few times.
    I think I narrowed the problem down to me futzing with the radio before the handshake was completed. Haven't had the problem for quite awhile now...knock on wood... :)

    Happened to me yesterday in my 2007. I have resorted to ripping the dash apart & unplugging/replugging it in.

    What fuse? Where? That sounds much easier than my previous methods......

    There's a small automotive type fuse on the side of the TOY-SC1.
