I SWEAR the Gen II had the volumn on the stereo automatically controlled based on speed. Like it would increase/decrease my blaring radio station as I sped up or slowed down. But my new prius is NOT doing that. Is this an option somewhere?? Or did they remove this feature?? Or did I imagine it on the II? Thanks!!!
The Prius did not have that feature. The only cars I've driven that had the auto volume were GM cars. I always thought it was a gret feature.
The Prius does have that feature - I think they call it. It is controllable through the Audio control screen. It is not very effective, I can hardly tell whether it is doing anything. kevin
It is there (at least on my III with Nav), select audio and the the DSP (I think) tab...you can turn it on or off.
With Nav cars, do as WSRussell said. With non-Navi cars, press the tune button 5 times (6 times on a JBL radio). You will see ASL as an option. Turn the tune button to select your preference (high, medium, low, off).
I am sure that the NAV has it because I remember the sales mention about the volume adjust base on the speed
What's most noticeable in the NAV versions is the increase in BASS level when Auto Sound Leveling (ASL) is enabled at higher speeds.
If the ASL feature IS working surely one should be able to see this by monitoring the Volume level numeric value. As speed is increased this numeric volume level SHOULD increase, right ?
Yep, the Gen II did this. Once I added better speakers, an amp and a sub woofer the profile of the auto volume is WAY too bass-heavy for my taste, so I turned it off. Nope, it doesn't show up as an increase in the volume number on the Gen II (so I doubt it will on the Gen III). But it DOES increase the volume, and, as noted above, the increase is not linear across the frequency spectrum.
My Non-Nav car has ASL choices of Off, Low, Mid, and Hi. In case it makes any difference, my audio system is Type B (Owner's Manual pages 291-2). ====== It does make a difference, see page 321.
I've never really cared for the ASL feature. It works ok if you drive with the windows down. It will help to compensate for the wind noise.
Yep, my 2007 non-nav has the same ASL choices. First you go to the Audio screen. Then you touch the DSP button, which will bring up the ASL choices.
Thanks for clarifying, Fuzzy! It looks as though the JBL (Type A) is either "on" or "off", however, the Type B has a range of choices.
Navi only has on or off option. And I turned it off and didn't notice anything different to when it was on. I really noticed it going highway to non-highway in the GEN II we rented for the weekend (package #2) but I hear NOTHING on mine! Maybe it's a more gradual raise/decline so I don't notice it?!? I am disappointed that I can't tell it's on cause I thought that feature was great! Guess I'll play around a bit more with my other sound settings and see if I can tell any difference. Thanks for all the comments.
