I'm the youngest of six children; five boys. Only my nearest brother and I were seriously competitive when we were younger. Now that we're all older, we are all jokingly competitive. About silly things. This summer, the family is renting a house on North Carolina's Outter Banks. Someone mentioned the idea of bringing some good tunes, some dance music. So, of course, I have to bring the best mixed CD of them all. I would love some song suggestions from everyone here at Priuschat. Now, you have to keep in mind that at 35, I'm the youngest. My parents, neices, and nephews will be there. I hate to sound exclusive, but I think the older members are the best able to provide some thoughts. Here are some songs that I'm considering and you can use these as reference: The Police: "Message in a bottle." Talking Heads: "Our House" and "Road to Nowhere" David Bowie: "Modern Love" In essence, my ultimate family vacation mix CD contains some deep-deep cut alternative upbeat songs. I considered "Punk Rock Girl" by the Dead Milkmen because I tend to jump up and down when I hear it, but it just doesn't fit. Before anyone mentions it, I'm planning on getting the songs for my mix CD legally. A little help?
OK I'll stay out of the suggestions since I'm younger. Just wanted to say OBX is very nice and I hope you have a lot of fun. We're going this fall for a weekend getaway. But for us it's only a few hours, not an all day drive! Bring the sunscreen. Most of us midwesterners aren't used to that much sun! I got fried last time I was out there.
I made 6 custom CDs to just keep in the changer at all times. I fit 17 songs per disk, over 7 hours of non-stop favorites. It takes long enough to get through all the songs in daily traffic that I've only hear each song maybe once or twice a week... That's less often than some of the more popular tracks might be heard on the local Classic Rock station! Anyway, some of th family favorites include B-52's "Love Shack" and "Roam", R.E.M. "The One I Love" and "Losing My Religion", The Knack "My Sharona", and Styx "Crystal Ball." Somewhat newer, Smash Mouth "All Star" and Cheryl Crow "Soak Up The Sun" are on there, too. And to mellow out, Louis Armstrong "Wonderful World" and Otis Redding "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" Trisha Yearwood's Wrong Side of Memphis works for us, too... obvious reason Tony, as for the fine artists you started with, we went with different tracks: Police "Roxanne", Talking Heads "Slippery People" and Bowie's "Under Pressure" with Queen.... I'm thinking our tastes probably aren't that far apart. Happy tunes! Gary
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(gaulfinger\";p=\"91108)</div> Not far apart indeed, Gary. Thanks. I might want a listing of your CDs for further consideration. Prius04, I had to laugh a little. My parents are and we were raised pretty religious. Two of my brothers work at a monastery (laymen). Sympathy for the Devil, though a good tune and probably enjoyed by my siblings night not go over well with my parents. :evillaugh: And NuShrike, I only went 2-deep. I think you went 3-deep. I have to admit that I can't call to mind any of those artists. Though I'm always open to new music. Also, anyone in Chicagoland who tuned out Q101.1 because they were too heavy metal all the time, give them another try. They recently changed their format back to actual alternative. They mix old school with a little new stuff and even throw on a few "Oh my God" songs. As in, "Oh my God the last time I heard that was in college." Thanks so far, keep 'em coming!
Well, since I'm younger, I guess I won't suggest some Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, and other's from the 40s (My favorite Glenn Miller song is Stompin' at the Savoy). Besides, I think those would probably do much better, especially with the older crowd, than say The Killers or Eminem. Which I also listen to. I like most music, just depends on the mood I'm in. At work it's nearly strictly 1940s music. Let us know what you end up choosing, and how it goes! -m.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer\";p=\"91224)</div> Ohh.. you want 80s-ish music! I was spouting recent Electronica/Progressive Trance (the new New Wave), and JPOP.. So: Andy Hunter (Go), BT (Simply Being Loved-Somnambulist), Crystal Method (Bound Too Long), Scorpions (Wind of Change), Depeche Mode, Metallica (black album), Queen (the blue Best Album), Rush (Chronicles), Wendy Carlos (for Tron), Tangerine Dreams, Cher's recent dance album, Madonna's Ray of Light, Seal's: (Kiss from a Rose", Bring It On, Crazy), U2 (Where the Streets Have No Name, Vertigo), Tears for Fears (Break It Down Again), James Holden (Horizons), Savage Garden (Bittersweet Symphony), and more later...
If you wanna do an '80 mix how about things like... Thomas Dolby: "She Blinded Me With Science" Depache Mode: "People are People" Club Nuevo's version of "Lean On Me" Gary Numan: "Cars" Devo: "Whip It" Howard Jones: "Things Can Only Get Better" Falco: "Rock Me Amadeus" The Tubes: "She's A Beauty" Or there's some for those 70's classic rock bands bringing the '80's... Styx: "Mr. Roboto" ...with parts made in Japan Pink Floyd: Any numerous great songs from "The Wall" And if you wanna add a little 'religion' for those folks in your family... Rod Stewart: "People Get Ready" Eric Clapton: "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" Bob Marley: "Jamming" dc Talk: "Jesus Freak" (actually any dc Talk will do) Any Michael W. Smith as well And in final mention I put this Bob Dylan song on my CD I used in my maiden voyage in the Prius. It wasn't until as I was listening to the song in the car I realized how relevant the lyrics were. The song is "Slow Train" Here the relevant lyrics of the song: All that foreign oil controlling American soil, Look around you, It's just bound to make you embarrassed. Sheiks walkin' around like kings, Wearing fancy jewels and nose rings, Deciding America's future From Amsterdam and to Paris And there's a slow, slow train comin' Up around the bend. Still quite relevant for a song written some 26 years ago.
I think some of what you want are “Desperado songs†(A Seinfeld TV Show reference). Ones which will make the old fart brothers stop and say, “Shhhhh, I haven’t heard this song in a long time,†yet without causing your parents to go screaming out of the room. Maybe lucky you . . .I have a list of about 100 songs . Most are mellow or love songs that would make for good background music . Some of my personal favorites are: The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats Sweet Dreams BY The Eurythmics Ballroom Blitz by Sweet Its Still Rock and Roll to Me by Billy Joel Killer Queen by Queen
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Kev1000000\";p=\"91438)</div> I have Kevin's music on a CD in my car and I listen to it all the time. Everyone else should get it. It's fun to listen to and really really well done. Alright, you all are nailing it! This is awesome! Without knowing how to say, I was asking just for things like that. The span I'm looking for is across the board and I didn't want to put constraints or create an artificial paradigm. You gotta have those songs that make you think of the college days (Personal Jesus), those songs that are classics (Van morrison's Brown Eyed Girl), but also throw in some just plain fun songs (Mr. Roboto). And you all ran with that. I knew I could count on you all!!
