What's up with the color matching restrictions??

    Hello,
Some of you have probably seen me around asking questions, and trying to find out as much as I can about the car (before I purchase it)we are all in love with: Prius 2010 :) . HOWEVER, my wife and I had already decided exactly which colors we would be getting, both extereior and interior. Suddenly (stupid me) realized the color restrictions restricted EXACTLY what I wanted. I wanted a Prius IV with an exterior color of either black or winter grey metallic, with a Sand leather (Bisque) interior. Apparently, bisque/sand interior are available on every single color, EXCEPT the ones I want it with (winter gray metallic and black) :( . This really disappointed us. Me and my wife were fantasizing of how amazing a black or dark colored Prius would look with a Bisque interior. We were in love with the idea, but our dreams have been crushed.

Well, I undestand the restrictions as far as options are concerned. They are made available in a way that they will make you spend as much money as possible. (i.e., can't get solar roof without navigation, or can't get homelink/auto dimming mirror and lumbar support without leather, etc). But why the color!! That does not affect the price at all, except for the Blizzard pearl special color. Why can't they just give us what we wan't? Is that too much to ask? They'll still be making the same amount of money and won't lose any money if they allow bisque with dark colors. Is there an obvious thing I am missing here because of my inexperience
? Is there really no way to get what I want (other than upholstery shops)?

To further explain my frustration, I know everyone is annoyed by this: For instance, I wanted a Prius IV because I want lumbar support, the autodimming mirrow, and 3 dr smart key entry..but I do not want leather! I find it quite annoying. Anybody know a way to get rid of the leather part as well?

The only way would be finding someone else that's wants your colours and trading them. To keep costs under controll you get "packages" which allows them to streamline the manufacturing. I myself wanted power seats but not leather which isn't an option but I'll live with flicking the switches.

??? Im sorry Im not sure what you mean by trading... I dont own a Prius yet. What I meant is when you go here (GST Build Your Toyota) <<-- Official Toyota "build your toyota" tool, they tell you you are not allowed to have bisque with neither black nor winter grey metallic, just as Blue ribbon and barcelona red are not allowed with Misty grey. The premise of my questions was: WHy is this so? Why restrict something that will not help nor conflict with what you call "streamline manufacturing"? I mean like I said, I understand how the packages (i.e, the whole leather with lumbar support deal) help them make more money and make packages simpler, but I see no excuse behind the color restriction. I really don't.

Also, what do you mean flicking switches? I thought power seats were simple non existent in the 2010 Prius?

Its to streamline the manufacturing process also, restricting certain interiors with certain exteriors to cut down on the number of combinations. All carmakers do it.

Have you seen the Misty Grey interior? Its similar.

Only in pictures. Looks grey to me. Is not that we love bisque, is just that we dont want anything to do with anything that resembles grey. To us, its sad, its ugly, its depressing, its too common, and we have had it in almost every single car we ever rode/owned! Im tired of it. No more grey...please, no more.

Okay, so it cuts down on the number of choices, I guess that makes sense. But what about custom orders? Does anybody know if I can get it that way? (meaning the black or winter grey with bisque)

I agree. A dark colored exterior would look great with the bisque interior.

Actually, I think the Blizzard Pearl is the only one for which you can choose any of the 3 interior colors. You are only allowed a choice of 2 interiors with the other colors. You have only one choice with Sandy Beach, which is the bisque! As others have said, they probably limit the number of combinations in order to streamline and limit the cost in the manufacturing/assembly process.

If it makes you feel any better, the bisque is so light and devoid of color that it might as well be grey! :D

Just have it recovered in fabric. Maybe someone here will buy your leather. You'll still have leather door panels and steering wheel though.

I agree it'd be nice to have a non-leather option all the way up the line, since for some people leather is an environmental and moral issue.

I guess it would really be a matter of seeing it in person. I dont mind the leather anywher else, its just that: I own a couple of leather office chairs. After sitting on them for more than 1 hours (specially if its hot) my butt gets itchy. I dont know if Im the only one, but I find this happens to me on most leather chairs. I have never owned a leather trimmed vehicle, but since I am scared it ll have the same effect on me...

Hmmm, does it help if its perforated and has a vinyl coating? There are all kinds of seat covers available (or new upholstery) if you find out it's a problem. I do think the lumbar support is worth having.

No, you cannot make a custom order. The distributor and dealers can only select from the predetermined combinations that are shipped to the U.S. from the factory.

Trading would involve finding another forum member or other 2010 Prius owner who would remove their leather or cloth factory supplied seat covers in exchange for yours. They can be removed and swapped.

Ohhhh! Really? Can a dealer do that? or would I have to go to an upholstery shop? any idea how much that'd cost? And for custom orders, I quote from Toyota "build you own" (GST Build Your Toyota) tool fineprint:
"If you would prefer to purchase a vehicle with no options or a specific configuration, please contact your local dealer to check for current availability or the possibility of placing an order for such a vehicle" <-- That's what I meant. For what I understand, if you want, for instance, a Prius IV with solar, and you find one just like that, except that it has window tint, and you absolutely despise window tint, then you would order from your dealer a Prius IV with solar but no window tint. Correct? (enough folks posted they did something like that) My premise is that using that same method, could you order a black or winter grey with bisque interior?

Yeah Toyota doesn't do custom orders. Even if they did, I don't want to think how long the wait would be...

Look at the Misty Grey. I actually confused Misty Grey and the Bisque at first...they are both so light they are similar.

What about Barcelona Red? I drove a Barcelona with Bisque that I liked a lot.

You might consider putting in sheepskin covers of whichever color you like; they are cooler and warmer respectively, are comfortable, and look very nice.

Why 3 interior colors anyway? I loved the red interiors in my 90 Caddy and 81 Pontiac Grand Prix. Okay, I didn't love the green interior in the 70 Pontiac Bonneville, but it was a nice match. And I love the turquoise interior in my 63 Pontiac Bonneville.

But then again, try to buy a red (on the outside) Mercury Mariner or Highlander Hybrid. Wonder what one color we will be able to buy in 30 years?
