First tank results:

Reached last winky-dot at 400 miles.
Blinking last winky-dot at 440 miles.
Refueled at 446 miles with 9.967 gal@$2.069/gal. Two "clicks" past auto shutoff by pump.

Indicated mileage = 46.5mpg.
Gonkulated mileage = 44.747 mpg*
* unknown how full dealer fill-up was.
Temp average ~ 65 F

 

Fifth tank: 05/05/05

Miles travelled since last fill: 486 mi
Gallons taken: 8.237 gal.
Calculated mileage: 59.00 mpg
MFD MPG display: 56.5 mpg

All previous tanks have been ~4mpg MFD better than calculated. This time, for the first time, calculated is better. What those have said about the two averaging out close to each other may be becoming true in my case.

I averaged out, all right. Ouch! Looks like a market correction.

I have no one to blame (previous tank was around 54 mpg) but myself, for I filled both tanks. I think the previous fill was incomplete so that is "corrected" now.

 

667 miles at 56.3 MPG. It took 12 gallons to fill it up. Would have been better but I left it on for five hours and knocked it down by 3.5 MPG with 270 miles on the tank. Next tank will be better.

 

I don't dispute your figures, but are you rounding up to 12? When I was learning about the Prius, I found the stated capacity was 11.9 gallons. So I'm just hoping you put the rest in a safe place (i.e., not in the charcoal filter).

 

I don't believe the charcoal filter is flooded when filling up to the top. If that were the case then I believe centrifugal force would flood the filter in a high G turn. I think there is a valve that prevents this. Just my thoughts on it. I have no proof. I'm still waiting for someone to provide evidence to the contrary.

Toyota states that the Prius takes 3.9 quarts when changing the oil and filter. That amount will result in an overfill every time.

I have put 12.749 gallons in my car in one fillup. That was when I went 763 miles on one tank. Many here complain about being unable to fill with anything approaching the stated capacity. I have gone over 100 miles on the last flashing bar many times. I fill at least one gallon more after the pump shuts off. That explains almost three gallons of the difference between my fillup and theirs.

Newbie to this forum and a Prius Newbie. I bought my car in Feb. and last week was the first chance to see how it fared on the open road for a long trip. Normal mixed city & hwy driving to date has resulted in an avg. of 47-48 MPG. This last week on my first road trip I filled up twice. The first fill-up I averaged 48.6 MPG on straight hwy driving and 50.1 on the second tank straight hwy driving. I'm still nowhere near sticker listing, but I am still pretty pleased (especially w/ gas prices being what they are).

I think J most probably copied some from NCF and some from Repair manual.

It leaves me thinking that there might be a problem and there might not. It also seems to say that if there is a problem, that the fuel pump would shut off and you would know that there was a problem. On the other hand, the second half, which seems to come from another source, indicates that in extreme cases there would be a contamination of the outer fuel tank which should begin to limit the tank capacity.

I have not experience any problems in over 50 fillups so I guess I will continue on as before but I will have this as a caveat when discussing this with others. Thank you for the info. Your Fillup May Vary.

By the way, I am currently at 330 miles at 59.6 MPG. The guage shows six bars. The first bar dissapeared at 200 miles. This looks like another candidate for 700 miles on the tank. I have almost 32,000 miles on my 04 Prius.

Ahh, I feel better already. Guess I'll cancel that exorcism appointment for next week.

 

Since I got the vehicle, the MPG was, from intial 46MPG in Illinois December, steadily improving.

This week I hit 12,000 miles, and I can't believe what is happening - on current tank (450 miles so far) I have 56.5MPG - doing nothing more than driving as I always was.

This vehicle blows me away - what a spectacular machine! At first I was kind of reluctant to believe the 56MPG stories here, until I saw it for myself.

I'm normally driving my one-way 72 mile commute through farm-land back-roads at no more than 60 miles per hour. When I take highway (90) at cca 70 miles per hour, the mileage drops to average 51 - 54 MPG. Windy day makes makes HUGE difference on highway travel. On windy day, it's 54MPG going there, but 48 or even less coming back.

For the first time, I added .25 gallon more after the pump shut off. I don't mistrust this pump, but the nozzle fits differently into the Prius (more snugly than I'd like to admit in a family publication). This tank's mileage followed one at 40, so I'd say some tanks were not consistently filled.

Though this is the best tank I've had, I'm not posting it in "I beat the EPA" because I'm fairly sure I will have an even better tank soon! (Probably not the very next tank, though.)
