Gas Brand and MPG

Yes there is a big differnce in gas I will only use Chevron.

 

Ditto here. Shell is the primary Top Tier gas around here. When I get down south I use Chevron too.

 

most gas stations where I am are BP...

anyone have experience with them vs something like shell? just wondering if I should switch.

 

Don't know if it has more to do with learing how to drive the Prius, but I switched from no name gas at Costco ($2.01 per gallon) to Chevron ($2.09 per gallon) and my MPG went from 47 to 52. I only have 1200 miles so far.

 

I have found that that Costco Gas cause the worst selling exhaust (sulfur).We are next to a Costco and have had a lot of cust. complain of the smell.

 

I only use Chevron or Shell, but preferably Chevron. Yes, there are other stations that sell cheaper gas, but you get what you pay for.

 

I have read on the internet that Texaco/Chevron is the best gas for mileage. Has anyone tried adding Acetone to their gas to increase mileage ?

 

DO NOT add Acetone to your Prius with the bladder. There is REAL possibility of permanant damage.

While it's great to get the best possible mileage, I figure I now have more room in my gas budget to make more conscientious choices.

Chevron may make the best gas, but I'm trying to avoid companies that keep lobbying against fuel efficiency and subsidizing the global warming "skeptics". I also won't do Exxon (who is still fighting to not pay up for the Valdez).

Please, support them whenever possible, even if you lose an 1mpg over those war mongers at Chevron.

Okay - this only half counts as it is not in a Prius, but - yes, my 02 Nissan Altima gets 40 miles/tank more on Shell compared to ANY other brand I tried.

So I got myself a Citi Bank Shell credit card which gives me 5% of rebate on Shell gas, and use Shell only.

Plan to do the same with Prius once I take delivery.

 

[font=Lucida Console:20cafff27f]I use Union 76 and I've been averaging 54.2 MPG. It's the cheapest gas in my area at $2.39/gallon today. I have almost 900 miles since I bought it a month ago. I drive mostly highway.

we used to only buy their gas. but we lived in la crosse, the 'headquarters' of kt, and so there weren't many other gas stations to choose from. i think they're pretty good though, never had problems with the cars because of gas.

 

I tried Chevron on this tank but I didn't notice any difference. I still had 2 bars left when I filled up though. I am going to drain this tank way down and then use Chevron again to see if the next tank is better. I'm willing to try anything to get back up over 50!

 

Buying gas cheaper is as good as better mpg. I just got a Shell Mastercard, which gives the holder a 5 percent discount on Shell gasoline charged to the card. Shell gas is about $2.01 here (Richmond, VA) and the no name cheap gas at Costco is $1.94. The net cost of Shell after the 5% discount will be $1.91. A 3 cent/gallon savings and a LOT better gas!!

Typically, I use two particular stations which are only a few blocks from each other; one is a Phillips and the other is a 76 (both stations have very low prices). The guy at the 76 station swears that the gas at the Phillips station has an unusually high concentration of water. I've also noticed that the Phillips station has been (somewhat mysteriously) closed quite frequently right in the middle of the day. Less frequently, I fill up at a local Shell station but, between Shell, 76, and Phillips, I have seen zero difference MPG-wise.

My most recent fill was at a BP station which I make a practice of avoiding as the BP stations I pass by seem to have the absolute highest prices around. This time, however, it was a matter of convenience. NOW, my MFD shows 190 miles, my gas gauge still has all the bars, the weather has been consistent, my driving habits (and trips) haven't changed, and I always squeeze as much gas as possible into the tank. Although I realize this is not exactly scientific, I'm a bit perplexed since recently I've been losing the first bar in the 160-170 range.

Well I've lived all over the U.S. and used just about every type of fuel in many different vehicles I've had. My personal favorite specific fuel is Shell V-Power 93 Octane, this stuff makes my Subaru Outback H6 run and perform like a dream!

Brandwise my favorites are:

1. Shell

2. Chevron

3. BP/Amoco

Honestly I don't really even like BP that much or think that it compares to well to Shell or Chevron fuels. The main reason I like it is because when I lived in Omaha, Nebraska their brand had the highest octane fuel at 92. Still though in my current local area, if Shell fuel is too high priced I'll just fill up with whatever WalMart is selling as they always have the best prices in town. My local Wallyworld sell 89, 91, & 93 octane fuels for pretty cheap by comparison, although all are 10% ethanol. I don't mind buying ethanol fuels though as they're cleaner than petro :mrgreen:
