FYI - The reverse beeping is super annoying...

Same with me...I'm not bothered by the beeping anymore.

If it bothers you, keep the radio turned up on the loud side; I find that the beeps will mostly get drowned out by the music!

 

I asked my dealership to set to one beep, and here's what he said:

That is a safety feature. It would not be prudent for me to disable it, but if you go to "howstuffworks.com" it will show you how. BJ

I've asked him again, with some PriusChat info to back me up, but I doubt I'll get him to change his mind. Maybe I'll check the howstuffworks thing, but I think he's screwy, don't you?

 

Doesn't bother me ... I think it's a good safety measure. I think it's as unobtrusive as possible.

 

My dealer told me the same thing, but then I said, according to page 584 in manual, you can do this. Then they email me back and say that, yes, they can do it, but its an elective procedure and will cost me money - how much they don't know. These Nashville dealers!

Has anyone else had to pay for switching from continuous beep to single beep?

 

The service department at Toyota of Tacoma said they could do it but it would cost me for their time. I asked if they could do it for free when I bring it in for service and he said since the scope would be already hooked up they could do it then.

 

My dealer set it to one beep for free before I picked it up. At first they said they couldn't turn it off and then I mentioned page 584 and they said OK.

 

Thanks for mentioning this. Now I've sent him the info, maybe I'll get a good response. If not, I'll see when it gets here if the beeps are something I can get accustomed to.

 

You may want to talk with the dealers customer relations person. They want you to be 100% satisfied when you receive your survey and if you let them know that you won't be 100% satisfied I'm sure they'll take care of that issue.

 

I would assume the reverse beep is there to serve as a warning for pedestrians whom would not otherwise hear the "silent" Prius coming towards them. I had a friend whom told me that she was almost run into this morning by a Prius moving in reverse as she was walking through a parking lot.

 

The beep is inside the car, not outside.

 

Not having owned a Prius, it sounded like a good safety feature. Now, knowing that it is not audible to pedestrians I agree that it is unnecessary and will also have it disabled at the dealer.

 

Crap, I failed to realize that I had this as a bargaining tool.. I totally let the cat out of the bag when I let them know that I already completed the survey and that I gave them high marks.......
Luckily for me at the time of purchase they gave me an invite to come back in two weeks later to come in and present any pressing questions that I had after I spent some time with my vehicle.

(de-lurking...) So the blue knob doesn't go to the 'R' and stick there like in a conventional car? Beeping aside, what other indications are there that you're in reverse? And how easy are they to spot? (without a NAV screen) I'm a Prius newbie who's only taken two test drives, and this detail escaped me. The beeping, I noticed! The salesperson who showed me the '09 never had me go in reverse, but the '10 sounded like a microwave oven! I was assuming I'd have the dealer set it to a single beep, but not if it's a safety issue.

 

I'm a newbie '10 owner, 3rd day. Had the dealer program the 1-beep-thing. I've put it into reverse about 20 times so far. It's a fine audible warning/reminder IMO and I think, even now, sometimes oblivious to it. Glad it's there and don't believe I'd have any intention to have it silenced. It's not that loud either.

Oh - to answer your question - the shift indicator in the MID will show 'R'. That's it - a beep and the R. No shudder no stay in R shifter, and really no 'reverse pressure' as in a normal car. So, be careful - another reason to keep the beep.

 

There are numerous posts that address eliminating the reverse beep and also the seat belt beep. Just use the search function. FYI, If I remember correctly:

Disabling the Reverse beep
Turn your car either on or to “IG-ON” mode (IG-ON is pressing the power button twice while your
foot isn’t on the brake)
Next cycle through the ODO button (if your car is already displaying ODO you just have to hit it 3
times TripA,TripB,ODO)
Turn off the car
Now while applying pressure to the brake hit the power button (aka start your car)
Within 6 seconds after starting push and hold ODO button for 15 seconds
After 15 seconds have passed while still holding the ODO button shift from P to R, then back to P.
Let go of ODO button
On trip display you’ll see either “b-on” or “b-off” we want b-off.
Press the ODO button until you see the display reading “b-off”
Power off the car
Congrats, you’ve successfully disabled the “dump-truck” beep from your toyota prius!
Note** If you disconnect your 12v battery anytime after doing this procedure the car may reset itself
and turn the reverse beep back on. Simply go through the steps again.

Disable the Seatbelt Beep

If you’ve ever put anything heavy in the passenger seat you’ll know what I mean by “annoying seatbelt
beep”. The procedure to disable the seatbelt beep is the same as the reverse beep except for one step.
When you get to the step where you would start the shifting process substitute that with the
buckling/unbuckling of the appropriate seat. Also, you must have someone or yourself seated in the
passenger seat while disabling the passenger seat.
Following these simple steps should result in successfully disabling.
