Congrats on your Prius! You'll love it.

    I have a black #1.

Cancel the extended warranty. First...that's way too high and second....you certainly don't want to finance it.

If you have the cash, you can pay for a 7year/ 75,000 mile/ deductible extended warranty from Troy for $690. It's the exact same Platinum package, he's a Toyota dealer and it's good at any Toyota dealer in the U.S. Don't tell your dealer about Troy. Just say you don't want it.

You can find the contact info for Troy here at Priuschat.

Second....gap is a good idea. But I think that's high too. If you are going to finance through your bank or credit union...get the gap through them. I did and I don't think it was $600. Considering what else they stuck you for, I suspect you can get better financing AND gap from your own bank or credit union.

I would cancel the autocare and the tires too if possible.

This is the stuff where the dealers really make their money but jacking up the rates and loading stuff on.

Re: Toyota Service Contracts / Extended Warranty - Discounte

thanks a lot. I'm financing with my girlfriend at 8.9% we don't have great credit, because of a bankruptcy 2 yrs ago. Do I have to go back to the dealer or cancel the policies from toyota. I imagine that the tire thing would have to be dealt with through the dealer since they included it in dealer cost.
the car also came with a $1095 auto butler paint protection. they probably put in on right after they got it in. I had no choice though. Do you even know what it's good for?

I was lucky to find one though. how long did you have to wait? I noticed on ebay that many are selling, just depends where they are.

I love the car, my first new one, I just can't believe the finance manager would take advantage of a clearly pregnant women and a child who is obviously not quite normal.

BTW, Auto Care is Toyota's pre-paid maintenance plan, I am not sure which exact plan you got for $425.00 (its the SRP for the Classic 3 yr / 40K plan), but that may or may not be the plan you got....they didn't use SRP as the price for the Extra Care.

Both the Extra Care and Auto Care plans can be cancelled through either the dealer or Toyota Financial directly (and possibly the GAP if its a TFS product), but beware that since it sounds like you financed them, they will credit the refund towards the balance of your loan, you wouldn't be getting a check back.

    thanks troy.

I canceled the GAP through mail, will get refund (taken off balance) minus $25 fee. I will cancel the tires, extra care, and autocare (425) at the dealer once I get the paperwork.

    Is the autocare worth it?
How much do dealers typically charge for oil changes and maintenance
the plan is for every 5000 miles until 40k, or 3 years.

Thats fairly easy to figure on a Classic plan, since it only covers oil changes/chassis lube at each service. Call your dealers service dept. and ask what they would normally charge for that. Since you have 40K plan at 5K intervals, that gives you 8 oil changes and compare.... plus figure what the 3 years of roadside assistance, computer generated maintenance log, and the service reminders are worth to you.

Re: Discounted Toyota Prius Extended Warranty /Service Contr

    Thanks for posting this information!

Just so y'all know ... I'm sad to report that there's still a huge amount of misinformation being thrown at customers by Toyota dealers.

I just bought my 2005 Prius through my credit union's car buying service, who used Magnusson Toyota in Auburn, California.

Magnusson's fleet rep (who handles credit union purchases) tried selling me the 6-year/100K warranty for the astonishing low "special for credit union customers only" price of $1,800!

After doing some web research (including finding this posting on PriusChat.com!), I called him back and declined the extended warranty.

When I pointed out to him that the Toyota Financial website said $1,475 ... without missing a beat, he said that was the DEALER cost, not the end user cost. He also told me that the Extended Warranty had to be purchased in the first 12,000 miles ... which also is in direct contradiction to the Toyota Financial website. However, he said, to show that there were no hard feelings, he said he'd honor the $1,475 price from the Toyota website, even though he wouldn't make any money on the deal.

In short: the more (truthful) information I gave him about what I'd found, the more he lied to me. *sigh*

I'm planning on picking up the Extended Warranty mentioned here.

I'm surprised at how greedy Magnusson was. They could have made at least a little something on selling me an extended warranty if they'd only been honest with me in the first place. Now they're going to get ... nothing.

    Thanks again!

    ... Allan

Re: Discounted Toyota Prius Extended Warranty /Service Contr

    Hi All,

Just picked a 2005 brand new Seaside Pearl AM Package from the dealer this weekend.

I had a quick question. I didn't purchase any extended warrenty or prepaid service plan. I know you have until the end of the standard three year warrent to purchase the extended warrenty. Whats the timeframe for the prepaid service plan? Will they not sell it to you after a certain amount of time? I tried reading through most of the post but 16 pages is a lot to read.

    Thanks,
    Toan

The Premium Auto Care plan has to be purchased within 1000 miles of the first scheduled service, so before 6000 miles and there is no limit on time.

Any one have any idea if the extended platinum warranty covers the big battery?? I'm not so sure this is in the covered items. Traditionally batteries aren't (like tires), but the big one is not your average battery.

    Thanks!

Actually, the HV battery is covered to 8 years, 100,000 miles w/o the Extended Warranty.

We paid $2295 for our extended warranty at the dealer's when we bought our Prius a month ago. As soon as I discovered priuschat and Troy's offer of the same warranty at $985 I got a refund from the dealer (well, we did the paperwork to get it) and ordered one from Troy. The process was pleasant, quick and as described in this forum.

Thanks PriusChat. Thanks Troy. You saved us a bundle.

Re: Discounted Toyota Prius Extended Warranty /Service Contr

    All,
I was charged 1600.00 bucks for my extended warranty and it was 6yr 75K coverage. I went back 3 days later after seeing Troy Dietrich's offer of 985 for 7 yr 100,000. They refunded the money by applying the price of the warranty back as principle on my loan. It only took a couple of weeks. Then I contacted Troy, sent a signed letter stating mileage and total cost was 985.00. Man what a sweet deal!

All I can say is thanks. Do yourselves a favor and contact Troy at Toyota of Greenfield, MA. I'm glad I did! I don't mean to sound like a commercial but I saved a bit of money on this deal.

Is it me, or does anyone else not get a link when they move their cursor over the "[email protected]"?
Yes, I know I can manually type it into an email, but I just want to know if my browser stinks...

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask my question:
Which states tax would I pay (if any?) if I purchase the care in SoCal and purchase the Priuschat warranty through Troy in MD?

I don't think you would pay any tax - it would be $985 flat. Troy could 2x check that for you when you email him about the product. When you use the BBCode to enhance text with color, sometimes it takes out of the hyperlink.

    Here you go :)

Very cool. No tax if I buy through Priuschat, so the dealer has to beat that price minus Cal state tax! ($81 .25) which seems highly unlikely...

Now... the only detail left: Gotta buy that Prius!

Thanks, Danny, about the info on the hyperlink-thing. It's all good now.
