I agree on the beeper--had mine disabled before I took delivery.

The service department needs to hook it up to their computer to do it.

sorry to hijack the thread, but what are other options/features that i can get enabled/disabled at the dealership? (eg. auto lock, seatbelt beep, etc.)

i'm picking up my car next week and would like to know what i can get done before i leave so i won't have to make another trip.

I quickly got used to it and rarely notice it anymore. I could disable it on my GENII but seriously, you stop noticing it after awhile. :)

It would be super annoying if there were a baby trying to sleep in the back seat.

I've been toying with disabling it but haven't really decided yet.

BEEP BEEP BEEP. BEEP BEEP BEEP. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP.

OMG it absolutely drives me nuts. I may just have to make the drive to Manhattan Beach just to get Dianne to turn this off!

There a chapter in the owners manual that lists 2 dozen customizations that the dealer can do.

Here's what I had done before taking delivery (plus I had to go back and have them disable the auto lock/unlock since I couldn't get it to work myself using the owners manual instructions):

-Wireless remote unlocking operation—customized setting of “all doors unlocked in 1-stepâ€
-Unlocking using a key—customized setting of “all doors unlocked in 1-stepâ€
-Reverse warning buzzer—customized setting of “beeps onceâ€
-Seat belt reminder—customized setting of “OFFâ€

Thanks. Think I'm going to get the all door unlocking and one beep customizations.

Since this system is sorta new to me with the shifter I think I like the idea of leaving the one beep so I "mentally" know it's in reverse. But my wife baby sits for the two grandkids and in my test drive of the 09 I found the constant beeping annoying. From my garage, sitting outside for the wife to get in and then backing out of the drive way takes 20 to 30 seconds and that's a lot of beeps.

1 beep when you put it in reverse is the most it should have. I disabled mine thanks to the info on this site

I am surprised these options enable/disable are not permitted by the customer to perform. In a sense, the GENII methods were really not documented but word got out and people did the customization on their own. Perhaps there IS a way in the GENIII for customers to modify their own preferences.

What is the purpose of the reverse beeping anyway? I’m definitively asking my dealer to disable it during the new car inspection once it arrives... it is indeed extremely annoying!

It is a safety feature. One time I was in my Tercel and thought I put the car in forward and almost hit the parked car behind me because it was in reverse (it can happen when very distracted by conversation, crying babies, etc). I really don't mind knowing for sure when I am in reverse.

Thanks, couldn't they just do something more subtle, like for instance spray water in your face... just kidding...

    lol

I think it is actually kind of handy. When I go into reverse I slip the shifter and turn around rather quickly so the beeps let me know I'm for sure in reverse. I do not take the time to watch for the gear selection notification on the dash.

You know, after all positive comments about the beeping, I'm thinking about trying to survive it... I guess it's really handy given that the shift always go back to the same position and can fool you….

No can do. I'm hoping to pick mine up any day now (fingers crossed) from Dianne. I requested to have the seat belt & pack up beeping shut off, but apparently the dealership will not do this due to liability reasons.

So I would have to have it done elsewhere in SF bay area. The question is will another dealer charge to have this done? Do you think they'd do it as a 'good will courtesy' at the first oil change? Who would you have to talk to at the dealership for this?

I've never driven another car that had this annoying beeping, including the new BMW 5 series which also has a joy stick-like shifter (once you select a gear it goes back to the home position).

The customization setting is to beep once (instead of constant beeping), so that plus seeing the back up camera view in the nav screen (if your car has it) should be more than enough to remind you you're in reverse. Honestly, if you need more reminding than that, you probably should increase your meds... :D

During the test drives, when in reverse, I felt like I was in a Uhaul truck. :D
