I removed my 6 cd changer (model#08601-00891), opened the top, and found that a couple of my cds in there were misaligned. It just took a little squeeze around the plates that separate the cds to realign them. At this point, I'd be happy to get my cds out in one piece. I'm squeezing and fearing that I'm messing with some really delicate parts. any help would be appreciated.

Good luck...have you tried reinstalling the changer, powering it up and seeing if they'll eject?
I've yet to see anyone who successfully salvaged their discs from a defunct changer.

Hello all, I happened to attend a Toyota New Owner get together at NoHollywood Toyota last night. About 20 people showed up. One of the more interesting topics that came up was this very thread!!! The Service Manager hosted/moderated the event and he said the number 1 problem that he was seeing concerning the CD unit was that people who burn their own discs are the ones having the problem of discs not ejecting properly! He stated that commercial made disks are thinner than the blank stock home consumers buy from Office Depot etc. I am still a bit skeptical on this one, and I plan to pull out the calipers and check the thickness on a standard blank and a premade recording. I will post a note later today!!

    Anybody else hear of this???

    Verrrrry Interrresting!!!!

It may be related to labels. May people use stick-on paper labels for home-burned CDs. These can cause problems if and when they peel.

yes, I tried that to no avail. I just get blinking lights, unfortunately. Also KKP6D, I'll be sure to never place burnt discs in there again. That's really handy to know for the future.

    Food for thought.

If the CD Changer wasn't designed for burnt CD's, then why does it support MP3 format?

so I just went in and got rid of all the cds. At this point, I'd be grateful for any leads to a mechanic who'll help repair the player at a reasonable price in the L.A.(Los Angeles) area.

i was able to get cd's out of defunct changers when i was a kid, it either involved
spinning the wheel/gears to manually to get the cd out, or dropping the changer
thus destroying the changer in the process..

as far as burnt CDs go, i reported this to toyota, but there is a definite flaw in my
changer that scratched cds not only cause pops in the playback, but those scratches / dirty disks can lead to you losing your radio presets!! and this happened
to me like 5 times even with the car in motion and in ready mode

Boy, I'm glad I don't have the 6 CD changer.

Good rule of thumb is to avoid putting labels on home-made CDs. Use a sharpie.

I personally am wary of a changer that requires me to only put in my original commercial CDs. Because when it eats them, I'm out $100.00 worth of CDs.

    Did you read post #3?

It has nothing to do with requirements. It had to do with thicker homemade CDs getting stuck versus thinner commercial CDs.

ill believe it when it happens to me

the only thing you have to watch out for is dirty disks, write down your am / fm radio presets on a piece of paper, you will lose them if you play a dirty disk.

it won't get stuck, its just the pops and skips somehow cause time outs on the "prius bus", thus causing your radio to reset
    to factory settings!

I had my dealer tell me the same thing about home-made CDs, and although I was skeptical at the time, hearing it twice makes me wonder. I started a new thread on the Main Forum asking just that question.

Old thread, but my wife's 2002 had the same issue (blinking lights). I dug into it and discovered a cracked eject gear, and that the linkage was binding. Thought I was going to get it back together, but one of the critical springs went flying. eBay has them for < $200.

Positive note is now I understand how the changer works in such a compact form factor, pretty slick!

OK - so how DO I get 2 cd's out of my 6-cd changer on a 2005 Prius. The dealer says to replace the whoooole thing for >$300. How about needle-nose plier? Long tweezers? What??? Help!

This is why I hate CD changers!!!!

They do this quite often and eventually fail. :( USB is the way to go IMO.

I think your only option at this point is to power the unit down by disconnecting the power plug or fuses then powering it back up and see if that helps. If there is a reset button in the inside of the slider (where you insert the cartridge) you can try that.

I see sooo many CD changers come through our shop with Cd's stuck inside them and rarely does it ever fix itself if it is due to a CD induced jam and not an electrical glitch. If you cannot repair it I would suggest looking into a new stereo with USB/iPod capability. Cd's are old technology. :)

No one said they were required. The issue was with some CD-Rs that are thicker than standard CDs.
