It was nice to meet Greg, Bruce, and the others at the meet-up today. It was a small turn-out, but that meant more time for all of us to do a very detailed inspection of the car. Greg even took a small group of us on a drive down I-10. At one point, the 2010 and a car on the entry ramp attempted to, uh, "converge" on the same point and the collision avoidance kicked in and started to really tighten all the seatbelts (I mentioned it felt a little like someone trying to do CPR on you. You could hear various little motors whirling in the seatbelt retractors as it "pumped".) We also got a demonstration of LKA in action. It was a bit uneven. Along curves, it really seemed to drive itself, but on the straight-aways it seemed to have a hard time staying within the lines. The adaptive cruise is wonderful. That should be a standard feature. The "treat" of the day was seeing the parking assist in action. We never did get the back-in to work properly, but the parallel park feature worked the very first time we tried it. We parked Greg's 2010 right between Bruce's 2006 and my 2005. We had it park into a pretty tight space. We got a bit concerned at first as it got within 8-9 inches of my front bumper during the backup step, but then it evened it out. As far as I know, this is probably the first time this automated parking feat has been attempted with a Prius in Texas. (I've attempted to attach a picture of the final parked configuration.) Thanks for pics and flicks. It was a pleasure meeting everyone and showing off my new car to people who could really appreciate it. Oh and that accidental testing of the collision avoidance was real fun too!
