Hi all, Can anyone enighten me how to negotiate with dealers for a new 2010? I don't want to pay over MSRP and all my local dealers seem to be on the take? Costco pricing is n/a in my area! I have a 2010 that I put a deposit on, but the dealer is now telling me that there will be a markup over msrp! How can I deal with them or can't I? I want a Prius IV with the solar as I live in Arizona and the solar technology is the best technology I have ever seen for hot climates! These babies will sell like hot cakes here! What are some of the deals other have gotten on their 2010's? Is there any special financing that Toyota is offering?
there are many threads already covering this, but to summarize: a lot of people are paying MSRP right now. There are three scenarios in play geographically: 1. shortage 2. cars on the lot unspoken for (excess) 3. balance in certain regions, reports of msrp plus have been heard (parts of california for example) In others, 250-500 off msrp have been reported. thew bulk has been at Msrp. the other factor is possibly unwanted dealer extras, such as paint protection, door sill applique, etc added at the port or by the dealer. also dealer proc fees. if you find the car you want, in a shortage or balance situation, at msrp, and with reasonable extras that you don't mind paying for, its not a bad deal RIGHT NOW this may change. several posters here have philosophical issues with paying at or near msrp and always get at or near invoice and never pay for extras they didn't ask for. they are playing the waiting game, betting that the initial hoopla and demand will ease over the summer and they can by being patient get what they want at the price they want. some of us can't wait, and or we think that supply will stay very tight through the summer at least (based on japanese domestic demand) and or that gas will rise significantly. there is a risk of sustained msrp PLUS like in past years. so we each make our decisions. I am in a high demand market and don't have an issue with at or near msrp, so long as the options aren't ridiculous. your choice. there are NO special financing or incentives on the 2010 prius did the dealer say what the msrp plus markup would be? finally - you might want to have this convo with multiple dealers
I will be more than happy to help you out. Being a Fleet manager at Larry Miller Toyota, I will shoot you straight. While you are correct all the dealers are selling them for over sticker...Insert pure profit, we are not.... Here is what we are doing instead. MSRP + Ceramic Tint $699 Clear Bra $795 Paint Fabric and Leather Protection $995. So while it is over sticker at least you are getting good products with your purchase and not paying pure profit... Either that or if you can wait until the craze cools down and you start to see 20-30 Prius sitting on the lot.... If I can help you in anyway, dont hesitate to ask.
please don't be offended but those are rip-offs $2.4K!! for crap. that nobody wants. overpriced crap that nobody wants. because you think you can. because you are too straight shooting to just add money over MSRP, you have to hide the gouge behind this crap. That is the opposite of straight shooting. its crooked shooting.
Really You think Ceramic Tint, Clear bra is crap..Do you even know what those products are and what they do for your car especially in a climate like PHX... I do, I installed clear bras for 7 years and done thousands on thousands... Wow...No worries, I am not offended at all. Of course someone could just pay the $3000 in pure profit!! Like the dealers in town are doing... You might not agree with paying over sticker and that is totally cool, I dont either to be honest. Dont think it was called for to say Im crooked.
those prices are exorbitant for the services rendered - the markup/slash profit is significant your imposition of these overpriced options because you can is what i take exception with i would not buy a car from a dealership that pulls this, cause i would consider it crooked. and i have a long memory. there is plenty of profit in a 2010 prius at msrp. i do not call you crooked, i call the dealership and this action crooked, but in the long run, one has to be comfortable where they work, and that might say something about you people need to shop around and give their business to a dealer who doesn't do this
Wow! A grand for paint, fabric, and leather protection!!!??? I think I'd rather just have a dealer put a "market adjustment fee" on the window. Market forces, supply/demand, etc., I think most people understand.......one thousand bucks to protect the paint and leather? Hmmm......
I've gotta agree completely with Fred on this one. Those options are hugely overpriced for what you get and contain giant profit margins. I went to a dealer who tried to sell me several similar options. Since I'm a very non-confrontational person I simply made an excuse to leave the dealership and never came back. However, seeing as this is the internet, I'm much braver here, and I'll outright say that this is a huge ripoff with all of these options. Ask around the forum and you can find people in pretty much any market who are being quoted MSRP. Many are being forced to get floor mats or a security system or something like that (good items, but possibly overpriced compared to aftermarket), but not anywhere close to this much junk.
I just purchase a 2010 Prius V w/ATP in Classic Silver in the San Diego CA area. There was no dealer markup. I paid MSRP for the vehicle plus tax, license, etc. However, three items was install at the port, not the dealer. The port install a VIP Plus RS3200 Security System 395.00, the word prius on the rear bumper 69.00, and mats (front, rear, and cargo) 199.00. The 2010 Prius V w/ATP MSRP was 33,148.00 which included the 750.00 for transportation and the three items that were install at the port. With gas costing 2.85 9/10 for regular unleaded, 2.95 9/10 for mid unleaded and 3.05 9/10 for premium unleaded, the 2010 Prius will continue to fly off the dealers lot. It is estimate that regular unleaded will be over 3.00 by the 4th of July in my area.
This is what I was talking about. Lots of dealers are requiring port options (although I don't know if you wanted these or not). However, at least you're getting closer to a good value for them. Maybe you could get an aftermarket security system for $250 instead of $350, and you can get the mats for $90 instead of $200, but it's a lot better than a paint protection that's little more than a fancy wax and costs several hundred.
Sadly, it's high priced forced add-ons that ultimately led me to pick Avondale Toyota over Larry Miller. Most dealers in town are forcing high priced add-ons. It's a great way to justify the markup in their eyes, but either way, the customer is paying more than MSRP. 3M Clear Bra can be done after the fact for < $400 by a *GOOD* installer and includes bumper and fenders. Even Toyota's offering which is hood only is < $400 at port. Ceramic Tint (Huber Optik) can be done for under $500. Suntek films for < $150. My dealer's tint offering was ~$229 for a brand I wasn't familiar with. I'm not sure I even want to comment on leather protectant. You can bet money on who I refer *every* AZ Prius buyer to... and it's not any dealer who tacks on REQIRED high margin add-ons. Priuschat is by and large a smart group - you won't find many who are willing to part with their hard earned money that easily. Good luck selling your cars w/ those options!
Big wad of cash, exactly the amount you think you should pay, drop it on the desk and say this, "New Prius please, (state colour, package and options here) and I'll pay exactly (say amount of cash you just dropped on the desk) cash and not a cent more. answer yes, or no?" If you hear "no", pick up the cash and walk out. Easy isn't it?
Exactly right. Nothing personal if I say No. If I say yes, you have the deal you wanted inside of 5 minutes.
Hi all, I just picked up my 2010 Red (Package III+Nav/JBL) Prius from Gilroy Toyota in Gilroy, CA. I called them this morning, Armando (Sales Manager?) told me he had the car on the lot and would sell it to me $250 under MSRP. I drove to Gilroy, wrote them a check and drove away with the new car. No hard sell, no pushing me on extras or other junk. I drove the car home (40 miles) and am quite impressed with it. Very smooth ride, relatively quite cabin at 70mph and super quiet on city streets. [I tried to post a picture, but the site tells me I can only post an image to an outside linked picture once I've had 5+ posts.] I've attached an iPhone pic taken at the dealership.
Gilroy Toyota had a blue 2010 Prius without Nav (I believe option II), that they were willing to let go for $100 under MSRP. Mind you, I didn't really negotiate or anything. I just asked maybe twice for the best price they could get me, they told me $100 under MSRP for the lower priced Prius and $250 on the model III w/ Nav. They still have the blue one on the lot. The dealership was empty btw, very few cars on the lot, we saw 2 other sets of customers the whole time we were there (at Sunday 5pm-7pm).
On Oahu they are currently selling at MSRP and you don't have to buy with any of those options if you don't want them. The vehicle was just released and there are probably only a handful left on the island.
They have a couple at Gatorland Toyota in Gainesville. 25k base, 1.5K in protectants and 5K "Admin" fee. So if you fell like dropping about 35K to walk out and get 50MPG, feel free to throw your money away. Good luck to them, I will never step in their lot again.
