Has anyone seen this new commercial from VW? It starts out showing this guy cleaning his Prius and then a few driveways down there is a guy with his new VW TDI. The neighbors exchange some small talk and the VW guy boasts about the fact that he gets 58MPG. Then the VW guy boasts about the performance and says his car goes VROOOOM!! Then he asks the Prius guy... hey what does your car sound like and the Prius owner responds with a wimpy sounding ..WAAHHHHHH. It annoys me when companies resort to this type of tactic when trying to push their product. First off, the real world mileage champ of these two cars goes toward the Prius. Secondly, they fail to mention that the sound of a diesel at idle vs. the Prius at idle is clatter versus silence. I can go on and on and on. I'd like to hear your comments? Anyone see the commercial yet?
I'm not too worried. The Prius is not for everyone and that is as it should be. There will always be folks who want something different and that ranges from a Land Rover to a classic MG. As for vehicle vs Prius ads, think about it ... VW is giving the Prius air-time. Bob Wilson
I wanted to post about this when I saw it a week ago or whatever, but couldn't find the video on youtube... Anyway what I thought was funny was the "It really goes!!! VROOOOOOOOOOM" part, because I've ridden in my buddy's 1.9 liter Jetta and it sure does VROOOOOOOM! Problem is, thats all it does. It doesn't go! It just makes noise, struggling to get up to any decent kind of speed. Moreover, its the 1.9-2.0 liter versions that get the "40mpg" that is bandied about by every single Jetta owner on the planet.... Whereas, with the Prius, you can get 40, 50, 55, or more miles per gallon! Also, its performance, while not sportscar-like, is definitely WAY better than a Jetta! Bad VW...
Yes.. apparently 0-60 in 13 secs for the 1.9 litre TDI is notably absent (because the Prius does it in 10.5 sec). I don't know how fast the new TDI is.

Ahh, this thread was fun to read. My 2001 Jetta, VR6 gas-guzzler, recently died. Its engine basically killed itself b/c it's so powerful. Thankfully I was able to get $2k for it (though it would've traded for $8k+ if still running), because I wasn't willing to pay $5k for a new engine (not including labor). It started costing me close to $1k/year to maintain and I didn't want to deal with that anymore. I usually drive in the city, and it's really hilly in SD so I usually got 18mpg... it was 16mpg city, 25mpg highway. So the first car I thought of after dumping my old VW was the Prius. I have no idea how the Prius drives or handles, but I'm moving on b/c of the mpg and environmental impact. My Jetta was very easy to handle and I often felt like one with my car... but it's really time to move on for me! I've been carless for 1 month just waiting for my 2010 Prius!! I think I have a few more weeks left... Oh well, at least there's Zipcar around my neighborhood!
Ya know, I've noticed my Prius has some decent low end torque and a nice little punch to get ahead of a car in the city. I drive it fairly easy on the gas, but no hypermiling, and I can't miss getting 52.x average these days. If I can get happy with the driver's seating perhaps I'll feel like it's really my car to keep.
am i the only prius owner here who found this commecial hilarious? if you can't laugh at yourself then how can you laugh at them? my friend has that volkswagon and he gets 50 something all year long and thats cruising over the speed limit on the highway. Here in New England in the cold winter months my prius never gets out of the forties. like someone said earlier everyone has their diffrences in cars.. a prius is better at low speeds, and the VW is better at highway speeds. apples and oranges
Just this past week, a friend who has owned a VW Jetta diesel for about four years asked me how expensive the maintenance has been on my Prius. I told him that it was just the normal stuff like oil changes, tire rotations and air filters when appropriate. He said that he was very dissapointed with his VW because during the time he has owned it the maintenance has averagrd over $50.00 per month. Score one for Prius!!
Hi All, I wonder what they are going to have the talking beetle say when when Wolfsburg says "Hey, now sell these Rabbit Hybrids.." in a few years...
so al import germans ( or people driving it ) talk whit that accent in the us... damm i never gonna get a VW is arnold the govenator driving a VW to
