Perhaps just enough ring wear in your motor that the xW-20 caused oil consumption. I primarily use 0W-30 and 0W-20 as "winter" oils due to the -40 temps I can experience in winter.

In the case of my recently sold 2004 Prius, even running 16,000 km with Mobil 1 0W-20, there was no significant oil consumption. I had the car since new, and switched to synthetic at around 16,000 km.

I had good used oil results, so I ran the 0W-20 year round in my Prius. My FJ didn't burn oil running the 0W-20, but the oxidation/nitration dramatically increased, and the oil thickened to a solid xW-30 range

I think synthetic oil is always your best bet. I believe some of the best synthetic oil is made by Amsoil. I like using the factory oil filter. However I do not go much over 3,500 miles with the factory oil filter.

I have been using Amsoil Signature Series 0W-30 100% synthetic oil with a Toyota factory long oil filter. I only put 3,000 to 3,500 miles a year on this car so I change the oil once a year.
