Well, the actual decimal conversion would be 42.532778. I tried plugging in a couple points in ArcMap one with your 42.3158 guesstimate and the other the real conversion 42.532778 and used the same longitude for both. And the two points were 15 miles apart in the northerly direction.

Ok, you guys are now way over my head!.....

I don't understand why, but I have noticed that my prius Nav locks on to many more satellites in the morning than in the eves here in Central Texas.

I wish I knew what all the codes meant.. I see some say "P" and then go away.

Quite a fascinating field, I see why you guys have gotten so deep into it!

I was trying to figure out a way to tell my elevation too since it seems to mention those figures, however I haven't noticed the numbers changing and they are all different based on which satellite you look at, so its all greek to me.

Wow, I did a double take on this one! Didn't realize maps were too technical for women to understand. We do go to school too like the men folk!

I knew some technical woman may take offense. I've been working alongside women since 1992 as thats when I started working alongside nurses.

I am involved in a technical field and although many women do well in those technical areas, I have witnessed it is not common nor the norm, as most excel in other areas deficient to most men, although thats not absolute either.

Sorry if you don't see the man/woman thing as the perfect team but it is.

Women are not equal to men nor are men equal to women. We have different percentages of hormones flowing through both of us causing one group to focus and revolve their thoughts and attentions on one set of priorities while the other sex focuses more on another.

I'm sure you've heard of the book "men are from mars and women are from Venus".
I acknowledge some men have varying amounts of traits normally associated in women as being strengths and vice versa.

Some men are very sensitive while some women are hard hearted and rarely let their guard down as they have learned to be a warrior to survive.

I didn't mean offense. But if you witness a boy and a girl at very early ages without any influence from anyone, one will be a rooster that bucks boundaries and test authorities while the other tends to be more nurturing, considerate for feelings and caring.

I'm sorry if nurturing and caring has gotten a bad negative label, but its actually a noble trait we see less and less of as everyone seems self centered and non caring in this world of survival of the fittest.

Any Woman should be proud of who they are, as should a man, as it is noble to be one or the other as they both compliment each other.

We all are given abilities and talents to help others and our selves thereby.

Those who sit on them and complain and reject the gifts given them and instead only want to be someone else are the ones who are really confused and will never find satisfaction.

I witness it every day at work... women tend to be less technical,.... period.

If you don't fit that category, you are exceptional and most likely had a strong father influence.

There is a reason we look different too... because we are, and are made for different tasks.
Anyone who cannot witness the basic characteristics of our bodies does not want to see.

If anyone cannot tolerate my feelings or viewpoints..... maybe they need to be more tolerant instead of blaming others for being intolerant.... it goes both ways.

Respect begats respect and both must be earned as is not a right.

If you are a woman and want respect earn it. The same if your a man.

Anyone can chose how to behave and how to live as a right, but they can't force others to respect them as that must be earned....A revelation many protesters just don't get.

NYMama.... maybe you can explain the flux of why our navigation systems vary from unit to unit and place to place better than some of the other posters.

Forgive me if your a satellite expert in the field.

Try to mellow out and not carry your feelings on your sleeve.

Forgive me for the strong rebuttal but it appears you misunderstood the whole point.

I think every person should be called upon for thier expertise based on thier abilities, not sex, color, or politcal party.

I find that those who cry racist and bigots are the biggest racist and bigots as they exclude everyone from support except thier party.

I don't have much tolerance for the intolerant who claim to not be accepted and tolerated.

We all have a right to think and have an opinion, regardless if its contrary to anothers.

Most of the time the ones who claim the most persecution are the ones who are expending all thier energy attacking others.

If your technical, then great!... why did you take offense, because your a woman?
And if so, do you think your typical?

    Well! Lots of responses!
I know as many have said that the GPS system is, or should be accurate to a matter of feet. I don't know exactly the figure and it could vary, but I mean at least within sight distance.

I checked the Prius NAV with the Garmin inside the Prius.
The seconds were off by up to 30 seconds.
    Example:
    Pruis N38. 56.32 W 27. 42.12
    Garmin: N38. 56,452 W 27. 42.137

Prius only displays two final digits and Garmin displays three.

I just used imaginary numbers here, but you get the idea.
My experience was that the seeming small difference in numbers was about two blocks South and one block East of my location in Prius while Garmin was trying to locate me.

Also these differences do vary. changing locations will change the variance, so it is not a matter of adding a value to one device to compensate the difference.

I do not know of a way to change the map Datum as mentioned earlier on either device.

I was wondering if Toyota would be any help. Seems doubtful to me.

Just frustrating as I do not know why this is happening, and I don't understand.

Assuming you mean there is a calibrate setting on the Prius, could you point me to that setting? It may be that simple to make an adjustment.

The difference between the Prius position and the Garmin position is easily explained:
The Prius shows its position in degrees, minutes and seconds.
The Garmin shows its position in degrees, and minutes with a decimal.
For example if the Prius would show 54 21' 30''
Then the Garmin would show 54 21.500'

I haven't dared mess with mine.. I'm not even sure what its for.. but its there.. It appears you can "correct" the area it says your at.

Only problem is.. I assume thats global so I didn't mess with it.

If your Nav is correct 95% of the time and you adjust it to fix the 5%, you just messed up all the 95% I assume?

I"ve had addresses come up a little off and I don't know if adjusting this calibration would correct anything or not. Usually I just hit "mark" and change the address to there and it remembers it if I'm wanting to save it for later.

Heres how you get to Calibrate:
    1. Go to Menu "hit the physical button"
    2. setup
    3. Scroll to the bottom by hitting the arrows on the left twice "will take you all the way down"
    4. Hit adjust "on the right"
    5. Now hit "adjust current position"

If anyone figures out the true benefit of this feature, I would be curious to know.l

I think I have done that calibration setting. While at home, since I know where that is, and should be on the map, I set it to show Home where the Prius is when parked in my driveway. I do notice though when I did that the address does not show correct when displayed at the top of the map. (I think you push "map" while in map screen to show this) So maybe that is part of the issue, but otherwise it showed my house had moved. I believe I saw that when I had entered "Home" as an address, the map showed my house down the street from where my car was parked when in the drive, so I adjusted it to show the car's position as "home!"

    Sho-Bud:
I understand the decimal versus seconds in terms of figures.
Does that mean the Garmin, using decimals, would always round off to the nearest whole decimal setting on the seconds?
I am wondering now, How far is a second?
Could a half a second be a couple of city blocks?

I am not sure how, or if, that could be compensated, but could explain the difference in using plain coordinates between the two devices.

Thanks for everyone's information! This is getting interesting.:thumb:

Sounds like its merely changing what you see, rather than adjusting the maps themselves and coordinates.

If so, thats no different than what I do... hit "mark" and go in and make that saved address your home and rename it in your "my places" and delete the old reference.

    +1 Agreed.

    Nortnarg,

On the Garmin, this is not a Map Datum setting problem but a Position Format setting i.e. h dd mm.mmm is currently set and it would need to be change to h dd mm ss.s. If it helps, Garmin have their Owner's Manuals available from the Garmin website.

It depends on where you are and whether you are talking about Latitude or Longitude and more likely a vector(? I'm not hot on maths) of the two.

I've been using Excel to play with the Simple Spherical formula from the following web site for the last few days!

Calculate distance and bearing between two Latitude/Longitude points using Haversine formula in JavaScript

EDIT: Hopefully, I've managed to attach the spreadsheet that I've been playing with. The data entry should be confined to entering the Latitude and Longitude. I've used Lat & Long for London, UK (as given by wikipedia). i.e.
    N 51 30 28 W 00 07 41

The sheet is split to answer two different questions. The top half is for saying given two Lat and Long what is the distance between the points. The bottom half of the sheet answers the question if the first Lat and Long numbers convert correctly and the 2nd Lat and Long are converted incorrectly what is the distance between the two - it makes more sense to type the same Lat and Long for this bottom half of the sheet.

I am sure I haven't explained myself at all well.

    Thanks for your help Timberwolf!

I got the excel sheet and will study that. At first glance it is way over my head, but did find some interesting info on the website.

I think I may have found the cure. You suggested to change the position format.
I pulled out the Garmin .pdf manual and there is a setting to change the type of coordinates. So, I will check on that!

Unfortunately the Garmin Nuvi 265 is in Chicago this week, and I am in Missouri.
Will certainly look at that when I can.
I doubt there is a setting on the Pruis to change format, but looks like I may get lucky on changing the Garmin.

Theoretically, the position shown with the coordinates on the Garman is more precise.
On the Prius nav every minute is devided in 60 seconds, on the Garmin every minute is devided in 1000th. One second would be about 0.017 minute

I appreciate your response.. I'm totally new to this gps stuff.
Although I dabble in other areas, I have never bit the bullet and bought a personal one because I always hate to buy until I know what I want.

Since I'm picky and tend to go for the expensive stuff, I hated to invest to only wish I hadn't bought. This stuff is intriguing as I never knew these were that precise.
Even with the precision of the nav on the prius, they could put a bomb in your yard, it appears with the precision of the garmin, you could have one set in your lap!

I"m sure the darkside uses these to hide all sorts of things for later access.

    Quite scary, this technology.

    Great!
Changing the format on the Garmin did the trick for me.

Going to format on the coordinates makes it match the format of the Prius.
The format looks like this: h ddd mm' ss.s'
the decimal in the seconds is beyond what the Pruis will show, but I find that to be within 2 tenths of a second matching the Prius.

That is getting both devices together in my driveway.
I will do a more useful test when I get out somewhere and can separate the two devices and try to find each other.

This looks to be just what I needed to play my games! Kewl!

Thanks to all who were a help in this.

The hidden service screen the 2005 Prius displays the seconds to 2 decimal places. The nav screen does not display decimal seconds.

Also, coordinate destinations are inputted on the 2005 using the ddd mm ss format not ddd.xxxxxx. The input format was apparently changed at a subsequent model year.

    Good info,
I took both devices for a spin today, and found them to be consistent with each other. The decimal or partial seconds that the car does not show could make you off by at most 40 50 feet in my totally unscientific test.
That is close enough for me to do what I need. Let the games begin.

Of course my main computer died on me today so that is taking too much of my time now . . . always something!!!
