So I'll take the '10 plunge. A 4-yr finance smooths out the '10 premium by about $40/mo. Worth it to me.

Hey! Don't rain on my parade!:p:p:p I was just looking for a tiny morsel of victory!

Cycledrum is in a great position by putting a huge amount down and paying little interest over a short duration. Lucky bum. I can scrape together only about 20% down and finance thru my credit union at 5%.:third: <-- so I get this third place trophy

Yeah, any new car ain't cheap. Sure wish I could commute on my bicycle every day. 24 miles is just too far to do more than a couple times each week. OTOH, I carpool with a coworker a few times per week.

Keep in mind that if the ONLY goal in buying a Prius is to save money on gas, you'd be better off w/ a smaller economy car. If your goal is to save gas for the sake of using less resources (while saving $$), the Prius is a great choice.

That depends on what car you traded in to get the Prius...in my case I was driving a 2005 Toyota 4runner getting 20-21 mpg...my Prius is the same montly payment...plus an extra 35-40 mpg. So...I'm saving money on gas AND using less resources.

In 8 months of actual fuel logs with my 4runner:
    23 fills
    9,226 miles
    445.83 gallons of fuel
    $1,169.24 cost
    20.70 mpg

In 8 months of expected fuel logs with my Prius:
    17 fills
    9,226 miles
    153.77 gallons of fuel (292.06 less) :p
    $307.54 cost ($861.70 less) :D
    60 mpg (39.3 more)

On a monthly payment level, perhaps, but consider the overall cost of the car, including financing.
