Why should early buyers have to pay for USB? Here's the answer.

Why should I have to pay to have a dealer install the USB connection in my Nav-equipped Prius just because I bought mine before September?

I'm sure that this question will become a hot one on PriusChat in the next few days, and one that I really wanted answered myself, so I contacted Doug Coleman after the Live Q&A today to ask him. The answer makes sense: Because September buyers will be paying for it, too.

There are no specifics right now, but it looks like in September when the USB connectivity is added to the Navigation package, the price of the Navigation package will be going up. Doug couldn't tell me (he didn't know) if that price increase would be the same as the price a dealer will charge to install it, or if the dealer-installed USB will be more expensive.

Either way, for all you do-it-yourself-ers out there, I'm certain that the PriusChat Shop will have it available at a discounted price (shameless plug!).

Thanks again for hosting the chat. Guess it really is now Prius CHAT hehe..

Hopefully it won't be too expensive. It is a good option though and thus would make the Prius with the most widely available audio input/external sources compatability.

In existing Toyota vehicles, the USB accessory is $299 installed.

True but it replaces sat radio. So for those that like sat radio, its a bummer.

I'd suspect in this case, it will supplement, not replace SAT radio, given the dependence on XM for traffic data.

USB connectivity allows either iPod integration or USB memory fob w/ MP3 integration. The plug will be next to the AUX jack in the center console.

Well here's hoping it won't replace sat radio, but I don't plan on getting the Nav so there wouldn't be traffic info on it. I guess waiting to see how Toyota integrates it in Sept might be the best thing. I'm a big audiobook and podcast listener so a silly thing like iPod integration is important for my long commutes.

i have to add, that european vehicles are getting usb/ipod plug as accessory in many new cars, even without the NAV. I wonder if this is the difference between european/usa vehicle or just something that has not become clear yet.

Even in USA, I see that many newer toyota's have ipod option as dealer installed accessory. Well in this case, in newest vehicles just released, such as Avensis, it is now ipod/usb interface, just like refferenced here.

If you do not plan on getting the NAV, then you will not have (or be able to add) the OEM USB port. From what I read, this will only be available on cars with the NAV package.

I will be getting nav, for many reasons, including the SAT radio. However, while I am thrilled that they will offer BT Streaming, I am also looking forward to adding a USB to this once available.

So....just so I get this right, does that mean your iPod can/will interface with the audio controls? Including the MFD/Nav Screen?

I am sorry but I am confused. You can still use a cable on the 2010 through the aux jack to connect your ipod and have it play correct? Sorry, idiot here :)

Yes--but you won't be able to control it (except volume) through the car. Not very convenient, or safe while driving.

Just to clarify, you don't need nav to get SAT radio, just need to get Prius III or higher. I understand that you want nav for other reasons as well.
