In the UK even the top of range Prius has no auto dimming mirror or even heated door mirrors! and we pay a lot more to start with.

Couldn't technology greatly improve this pet peeve of many?
It seems that the bulk of the rear visibility problems reduce to
that of housing a motor and a wiring harness for that dumb wiper.

In what parts of the country do people actually use their
rear-window wiper that much? And, starting with the 2010 redo,
there is hydrophilic/hydrophobic treatment for the front windshield.

Why not do the same for the rear and ditch that icky thing, in
conjunction with either making the spoiler transparent or eliminating
it entirely in favor of some unified curved glass or plastic as
shown in the Prius Hybrid X Concept at the 2007 Geneva show?

In AZ where dust is prevelant, it's mighty convenient to spray the rear window and wipe when the sun is to the rear. Makes the difference between glare and seeing cars behind. There are also some low-speed driving situations where having the wiper keeps the window clear. Anything above residential speeds, airflow keeps the window mostly clear, so I only use the wiper when stopped or driving slowly.

Here's the link for how to eliminate the wiper and quash the
Prius rear window visibility problems once and for all:

Toyota's Next Prius: Hybrid X Concept Unveiled - KickingTires

Does anyone have a photo taken out the rear for this concept Prius?
And, what are the technological showstoppers in mass-producing
    a Prius hatchback that way?

Point granted, and here's to getting self-cleaning, anti-fogging glass
(first made by Pilkington for side mirrors) onto that rear window:

    http://insurftech.com/docs/links/Re...rican-Self-Cleaning-Materals-Lotus-Effect.pdf

I guess this sidetrip begs the question on well the tech really
works on the 2010 Prius front windshield?

Any place it snows. Now a bigger question is why do car manufactures bother with air conditioning. ;)

My Scion Tc that I expect to trade for a new Prius has no rear wiper and I don't miss it. I put Rainx on the hatch window and it is quite clear in rain. If snow has piled up before I start off, I wipe it off as I do the other windows. If it snows while driving, the rear defroster takes care of it. Of course, if I had it I'm sure I would have used it a few times. To each his own.

Hey, I was out your way last fall - nice town. We have Manitous here too, but they are islands.

As for the rear wiper, if I am moving I don't need it. Standing still the snow will accumulate faster than it can be removed with the defroster.

Of course, if I'm really honest about it, the rear window is so small it doesn't really matter if it is clear or not. For me it's more important that the backup camera remain clear.

    Window defogging.

    Smart arse! :D

I use the rear wiper sometimes .
Does anyone else see the irony that a person complaining if a lack of rear vision simply because the window is split in two would advocate the removal of a device designed to enhance rear vision when it it at its worst? I must admit however, the rear wiper is next to useless
