2009 timing belt/drive battery longevity I have read my service book 3 times and I do not see a timing belt.
Traction battery failures are very rare. The warranty in California and CARB states is 10 years The tiny 12 vdc battery might poop out after 4-5 years, just like in any other car
I stand corrected. Either way, I'd rank the NiMH battery pretty far down the list of things to worry about
The traction battery warranty in CA and other PZEV states is 10 years or 150K miles. The warranty in those states on certain emissions-related and hybrid system parts is 15 years or 150K miles. Since the "generator" and "motor" are included in the list of hybrid system parts, it appears that the transaxle is covered for 15 years / 150K miles.
I think Jayman was right that the hybrid battery is warrantied for 10 years in California. My 2007 Warranty Booklet says the hybrid traction battery is warrantied for 120 months (10 years) or 150,000 miles in California and CARB states.
Is it any wonder why several other states don't want to follow CA's emissions/warranty path? Who remembers when a new ride only had 12 months or 12K miles warranty. I remember my '72 Vega made it to 10 months, and just over 12K miles before it went 'poof'. What was that ... 38 years ago? You'd think I'd have let go of that by now.
1 year/12K warranties weren't THAT long ago. We used to have (parents bought) an 86 Olds Cutlass Ciera new. It had a 1 year/12K mile basic warranty and a 3 year/36K mile powertrain warranty with $100 deductible. It always leaked transmission fluid despite multiple attempts to repair including paying the $100 deductible at least once. My parents bought a 92 Dodge Caravan and Chrysler back then offered a choice of IIRC 3/36 comprehensive warranty or 1/12 comprehensive with 7/70 powertrain.
My bike had 2 years, unlimited KM warranty and a good thing it did. I remember the old 12/12 warranty which in Australia became the 12/20 warranty. Mitsubishi here have a 5 year unlimited kilometre warranty but they need it to sell their cars. You can see below, all the warranty I need.
Vega ... Motor Trend Car of the Year! lol. I was pretty lucky as my '74 Vega was more or less trouble free.
My family had an MG-B in the mid 1960's. At 15,000 miles the entire engine had to be rebuilt. I won't even talk about the Lucas electrical system, the dual Weber downdraft carburettors, the lever action shocks that required you to check their oil levels, or the wheel knock-offs that would either come loose or seize up. Ok, I guess I'm .... uncorrected? Either way, NiMH failure is pretty far down the list of things I'd worry about. The Prius I sold was well outside any possible warranty coverage, and the taxi driver who bought it didn't seem the least bit worried Yes, I did warn him the Trac on my Prius was quite a bit more sensitive than the newer models, hope he gets a good set of winter tires. He didn't want my studded set, guess I keep them for the replacement Prius
Speaking of selling your Prius, I see you are still hanging around here. Isn't there some sort of FJ40chat.com? Tom
