I have had my Prius for 24 hours now and its great. I have package #4. Is there anyway to have the car automatically lock after walking away? And can I install something that will automatically lock the doors once I start driving? What is the little red car light inside the car once you walk away and do not have the FOB with you?
    Thanks
    Lee

There is a mod at Coastaletech that will lock the doors automatically when you reach 15mph.

I know someone else has a mod locks the doors automatically when you start the car and unlocks them you shutdown the car. Don't remember where it was from though.

The red light is your theft-deterrent system light. It's to tell you that the system is armed (if blinking)

That little red blinking light tells the would be thief that there is trouble ahead if he breaks in. They know what it for.
Is it so much trouble to touch the little BLACK RUBBER SPOT on the door handle to lock the car? No keys necessary. Automatic locking on the road is also real tough if you cannot find the door lock on the door.
I know, we like bells and whistles, me too.

I touched the black button but it did not lock anything. The only way I can lock it is from the FOB that I usually have in my pocketbook so I have to dig it out of my pocketbook to lock it.

[font=Verdana:3c5d0342b6]When I drove my Plymouth, I always hit the door lock on the inside of the car door when exiting, and all the doors locked after I shut it (or after all the other passengers shut their doors). I follow the same procedure with my Prius and it works fine. I never have to remove my key fob from my purse this way.

But I miss the auto-lock feature I had with my Plymouth. After much thought, I have decided to purchase the auto door lock module from Coastal Dave. Once installed and operational, my doors will lock automatically once my Prius reaches a certain speed. Sure, I can easily lock the doors once I am inside the car. But my memory and habits are not fail-safe, and it is a small price to pay for peace of mind.[/font:3c5d0342b6]

This is odd. My sister and I both bought a Prius two weeks ago and hers is doing the same thing - the black buttons do not lock the car. Her second FOB is inside her house quite a distance from the car. If anyone has a clue about this we'd really appreciate it.

The black buttons should lock the car if you have the fob and all doors are closed. The inside button locks the doors whether closed or not.

If you leave your fob in your purse and your purse in the car the black button will not lock the doors. A long warning beep will sound to warn you of a problem. This is a good thing.

You also get the long warning beep if one of the doors isn't closed completely and you try to lock the car.

To lock the doors from the outside, you have to press and hold the black button on the handle for 2 full seconds (try 5 if your count to 2 is a little fast).

I don't think the door locking is programmable by the dealer, I know door unlocking is. You may want to check with the dealer.

Are you forced into putting the fob into the slot? Yes? Then the SKS is turned off. Chcek the button neer your feet under the steering wheel. That's the SKS defeat button.

Car should also unlock if you touch the inside of the front door handles with the fob present.

    If not, see your dealer.

No, you don't have to hold the button for 2 seconds. Panic button, yes, but not the black button on the door.

Yes, the unlock function for the doors is programable (by you, if inclined). I believe the default is touch drivers door handle, only that door is unlocked; touch the trunk latch or the right door, all doors are unlocked.

I prefer to unlock everything at once from the drivers side so I set mine to unlock all doors and the hatch. The owners manual provides simple directions on how to do this.

Hmmm... Learn something new everyday. I always assumed you had to hold the black button until the car beeped. Very cool.

Waitaminit: you must have had the fob with you, otherwise how did you enter and drive the car in the first place?

Anyway, Prius won't let you lock the doors if you leave the fob inside the car. Push the black button on the door; you should hear the doors lock (a click or clunk), which is normally accompanied by one beep and a parking lights flash. If nothing happens, or if you get a looong beep, the doors did not lock. The car <-> fob communication can be blocked if the fob is buried in a lot of loose change or a bunch of ordinary keys, or is next to a cell phone. This has happened to me a few times.

Uhh, are you sure about that? The "chunk" sound of the doors locking seems very un-ambiguous. If I don't hold the black door button until I hear the doors "chunk" (which is accompanied by one beep and a parking lights flash, and which on mine takes about two seconds to initiate), then my doors have not locked.

Yes, just after I posted, I checked. About a 0.2 second press is sufficient. Now there is a delay, as if the Prius was thinking about doing what you asked, and that does take a second or two.

Actually, the press is a request to lock. Then it sends a request to the fob from inside the car to be sure it isn't there, waits 1/2 second, then sends a request to the fob from the door you are at, waits for proper code response. If the code checks out, it locks.

It won't hurt though to hold the button until the Prius responds, but it isn't necessary.

Prius won't let you lock the doors if you don't have a registered SKS fob with you. Of course, you can't power up the car either without the fob with you, either in your pocket, or in the slot.
