I have an '09 package 7 and have had NO issues with it since the day I picked it up this fall....until this week.

Over the past 4 days I have had 5 instances when driving and listening to the radio the volume instantaneously jumps to the highest level. Not only does it blow out my eardrums but is scared the crap out of me so badly the first time it happened I almost lost control of the vehicle (with the kids in the car)

I am not talking about a slow roll up to the highest level...i am talking about listening to low-volume radio and getting blown out.

Has this happened to anyone else? Self-fix issue? Dealer service issue?

    Thanks!!

It's under warranty ... take it back to the dealer.

There's nothing you can do to fix it -- the dealer will have to swap out the radio.

I have never heard of anything above Package #6 for the 2009 model year.
Can somebody maybe inform me of what is above package #6 for 2009?

Package 7 includes machine gun, ejector seat, and can spray oil.

This happened to me several times but the dealer wouldn't do anything about it because they couldn't replicate the problem, but finally I got it into the dealer while it was doing its mind blowing noise and they replaced the radio. Two weeks later it's doing it again. I don't know what they'll try next. My friend rented a Prius and the audio had the same problem so it's not a unique problem, but what fixes it?

There are only two possibilities: either the radio control unit mounted in the instrument panel, or the JBL amplifier mounted under the front passenger seat. If the radio control unit was replaced but the problem remains, then the JBL amplifier is the likely suspect.

My fellow coworker ('06 JBL system) has been suffering from the exact same issue. She hasn't seen the dealer since it's well outside the factory warranty period. At least I can report back to her that her Prius is not the only one to suffer from this problem.

Hopefully someone out there figures out the correct fix soon.

I'm occasionally seeing a problem where the volume control does nothing, or just toggles between two levels (15-14-15-14-15-14) as it's being turned one direction. The steering wheel controls work fine when it's doing that.

I dread trying to reproduce it for the dealer though, since it's intermittent.

They replaced the amplifier under the front passenger seat and I've gone 200 miles(much longer than I've ever gone) with no problems so I'm hopeful the problem is fixed.

I've had this problem since my '06 was new. It never happens when I take it to the dealer, just on my close-to-two-hour commute, when it goes up and down and up and down until I have to turn the radio off. Gaakh.
