    Danny,
I'm glad things are working out. After all, there's always some rough road to traverse, things never, ever go smoothly. It's called Murphy's law.
Tell you what my next project is and am hoping for help from everyone who owns a Prius with the NAV and BT functions disabled by Toyota as soon as the car starts moving.
I believe if Toyota receives a thousand letters and/or calls to the customer service department, expressing displeasure with not having NAV and BT functions available as soon as the car starts moving, they'll do something about it. (Maybe that's wishful thinking? )
We're already holding them harmless by pushing the "I Agree" button. Why exercise punitive action on us by disabling all functions of the NAV and BT as soon as we start rolling. There are no laws agains using NAV or BT while moving. This Big Brother stuff's got to be stopped.
Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a petition? Individual letters? Something else?
    Serge

I think you miss the point being made by the writer.

Why should we have to go to the aftermarket and spend additional money to get something that's already built into the system and disabled by Toyota?

I would support a letter writing campaign or petition. Let's get a new thread started and do some brainstorming.

I'm sure this is related to fear of lawsuits. I'd bet that the European version of the Nav system doesn't do that. I doubt that a letter writing campaign would make a difference.

What's to lose? All it takes is a stamp and a few minutes time.

Does any manufacturer put one in a car that is not disabled while driving? Even the aftermarket installed in Avis rentals are disabled. You can write all you want, the legal departement won't budge on this issue. It will be the peson not in a Toyota that sues when someone adjusting the Nav/BT slams into someone in a crosswalk. While it may not be technically illegal, doing anything distracting is in my state. Also, it is illegal to have a DVD player upfront for the driver to see, but many are installed that work while driving for the driver. But not by the auto makers.

I didn't miss the point. I was showing him a way to get it done. If he wants to go the other route, good luck.

This thread is a split from the HeatShield Sunshade discussion. I felt it derserved its own thread.

I hope all the people interested in this are ready for the consequences.

"I demand the ability to have the radio messages, etc., available while driving" had better not be followed by "I demand compensation for being distracted by those radio messages, etc., and having an accident".

I'd expect Toyota to require a signed affidavit when the car is retrofitted, with YOUR lawyer's co-signature agreeing that it's all your fault if something goes wrong, along with your agreeing that your lawyer was competent to say it's all your fault, etc.

No last-minute cries that you didn't know your children's lives were actually at risk by this. No nothing. With responsibility for your actions completely in your hands, THEN have the work done.

As it stands, I wonder who will be first to sue Coastal after an accident in a NAV-modded car, no matter what Coastal's disclaimer says?...

I think it should be okay to use those functions while driving, but only if you're smoking a cigarette, eating a meal, drinking a beer and holding a cell phone to your head at the same time.

If you think smoking is unsafe feel free to substitute shaving or applying lipstick.

Is it that big a deal to pull over for the 1 minute it would take to put in the info you want. Yes, I know it's inconvenient, but so is running into something/someone while you're trying to decide whether it was Juan's Taco Emporium or Juan's Taco Stop that you wanted to go to.

Re: Petition to remove allow use of NAV & BT during move

To me, the issue isn't that the Prius prevents me from using the NAV system while driving. The issue to me is that it prevents the passenger from using the NAV system while driving. If we're driving down the freeway looking for someplace to eat, it is entirely a big deal to pull over for 1 minute to use the NAV system to find something convenient.

    agreed on the passenger point.

i actually received a ticket years ago in Ohio on the Turnpike, where you were not allowed to pull off the road unless it was an emergency.

it probably didn't help that I was urinating in broad daylight (trying to slouch against a bridge abutment or something) when the trooper pulled up. to me, it should've qualified, though.

    Porche NAV isn't movement disabled.

This is about free-will and choice, and the removal of it. Why not make celphones movement disabled while you're at it?

I think they should have the agree statement in the beginning include the following:

A use of the navigation or bluetooth function while vehicle is in motion is not recommended. Toyota will not be held liable for misuse of the functions. By pressing 'I Agree', it is assumed you've read and understand the risk at hand.

Hmm, seems a bit long. I'm sure they can shorten it.

I'm all for it as long as Toyota is able to prevent those bongheads from suing.

Re: Petition to remove allow use of NAV & BT during move

My wife and I will be getting our Prius next week (2005 Silver #6). Our local dealer had a buyer back out before it was delivered and we were the first people who came in to look for one. Needless to say I am not too informed about what the systems do.

So I know that I can't set the Nav system while the car is moving. But is it also correct that I can't use a bluetooth phone while driving?

    Thanks
    Rick

Just because it's not illegal to use while driving, doesn't mean the driver or auto maker couldn't be liable. Liability is often determined after the fact.

A fair compromise would be functions enabled if someone's in the passenger's seat. Presumably the sensor's already there for the airbag system. That would satisfy a "reasonable" standard of care for the automaker.

I'm planning on installing the coastaltech switch, but fear I'll start using the system while driving. As it is, I'm using the screen far too often while driving.

Re: Petition to remove allow use of NAV & BT during move

I've seen someone watching a DVD while driving on the freeway, and many times reading the newspaper. Toyota is just being proactive and not just saying you should not, but making it so you can't. I believe they should allow it to be used so the passenger can adjust it. Maybe a weight senor like the one for the airbags. Then you could override that and do it anyway.

Also since I don't have one, can you tell me doesn't it respond to voice commands? Then you could tell it to find fuel, food or whatever.
